I remember when he was first appointed as manager he had to manage a lot of egos and re-invigorate a few others. He was the manager who oversaw their development into what they are now. I don't think there is a better fit for the role of Barcelona manager, even if he may not necessarily be a success at Milan, United or Madrid.

He had their respect instantly, and that's half the battle, at least.

I think he has something, and I think he's taken Barcelona up to their currently unmatched level, but, with those players, they'd still be amazing without him. I'd be very wary if he were named Arsenal manager in two years, lets just say that much.

Guardiola´s ability to get players who have pretty much won everything there is to work as hard as they do in defense is admirable. He reinvented their pressing game as well when he joined, and he has played some seriously strange formations this season to accomodate as many as possible of his attacking players.

Ricky, don't you think that if Guardiola walked into the Emirates this summer with his 7 or 8 trophies from the past three seasons (whereas we've gone 7 or 8 years without a trophy), that our players would immediately respect him. Thereafter, it would be up to him to prove he continues to deserve that respect.

I think from the point of view of tactical flexibility, fitness and defense, Guardiola would make an immediate improvement on what Wenger is currently doing.

Guardiola can't make Theo and Gervinho good players. Wenger would win the treble too with the Barca squad. We all would.

I genuinely don't think the players lack respect for Wenger.

As Gurgen says, good players are what counts. We don't have enough of them, and some of that is indeed on Wenger.

But no, it's not the same thing. Tactics aren't just substitutes. That's match-day coaching. Pat Rice could do it for all I care. Tactics come down to postulating a philosophy, create a system, motivate and develop functional players and to set up the team before the game starts. From a tactical viewpoint Wenger is easily one of the most intelligent managers around. He gets even limited players to take part in advanced combinations and splendid attacking moves that managers with twice the budget can't replicate. He's just too reliant on a few great players which means he doesn't have much to mix things up with when they go south or injuries strike. Hence the Chamakh and Rosicky substitutions.

Thats more a strategy you're talking about, tactics are about how you implement it on the ground.
The role/defination of a manager in Britain is a strange one, part director of football part coach, but its the one most of us are used to.

Strategy is an important part of tactics though. I agree that subs can sometimes turn a game around but usually it's because the setup was wrong from the beginning. The idea is to put out the best team right from the start and teach them how to deal with any adversity they might face.

So how come Rijkaard didn't the year before?

He took Barca to another level.

Everyone said that any manager could win the league with Chelsea but Mourinho didn't in 2007.

Neither did he win the CL and his teams were definitely capable of it at the time.

luck plays a bigger role in cup competitions, though. intellectually, everyone should understand that.

The thing I like about Guardiola is that he's not afraid to have them playing to their strengths. A lot of the time they play 3-6-1 nowadays - and it works scarily well.

That shows something over and above simply having an incredible squad, and Messi. It's not something Mourinho would be doing.

However, he's a Barcelona man through and through and he will have a lot left to prove when he decides to leave.

Yes luck plays a part in every game league or otherwise, but in cup games you need to adopt a different mindset, theres no draws and no way back so it pays to be more cautious in cup games.
2- legged European games require a different mindset again, there is a way back after the 1st leg but you must always be mindful of the massive role away goals play and so it pays to be more attacking away.
Either way the later stages cup tournaments games tend to be tight cagey affairs favouring a clever counter attacking approach- Thats why Wenger has never won a European trophy.
