Madrid have beaten them in a cup final, their equivalent of the Fa Cup.

I trust Barcelona to beat them in most games but in a final, Mourinho usually gets his tactics spot on and betting on a Mourinho team in a final is easy money.

I don't think Mourinho will beat Barcelona any more often than we would, final or not. His tactics are terrible and have been ever since he took over Real Madrid.

They just have a better side and a less limited philosophy. Someone asked earlier why Özil didn't start the game. You just need to look at the way Real play to understand why. Mourinho, the coward, started with Pepe in midfield again. Only reason to do it is because you're more concerned about countering your opponents than you are about your own attacking game. He loves to build teams that are physical, direct and pacy. Soon as Ronaldo or any of the other wide men gets the ball they're off towards the touchline. Then you look at Özil and realise that he's physically underwhelming, not particularly quick and doesn't score a lot. His strengths are being wasted as long as Mourinho is their manager.

I really hope that Özil is getting fed up with his situation and wants to move in the summer. We should offer Real every cent we have in the bank in that case.

Terrible they might be but in a final he manages to motivate his players to perform above and beyond their level in order to win the game.

I don't see many managers that could out-tactic mourinho in a final. Barcelona beat them because they have this godly, all conquering team that should and usually do beat most teams that they come across.

In the Champions League Final that Inter won, they only had 32% possession overall but won 2-0.

Yeah, Ozil is a fantastic player. Doubt we would be the only ones in for him if he were to leave Madrid.

That's a pretty good explanation regarding Mourinho's approach to games against Barca. I can kind of understand the thinking behind it too. I mean it's very hard to beat them at their own game so he tries to overpower them using the physical advantages of his players. And the plan still fails most of the time...must be frustrating.

Wenger gets a lot of flake for his tactics but his approach vs Barcelona was near perfect last year. Such a shame...

Yeah. I actually think Wenger is an outstanding tactician. He's incredibly stubborn though and never makes the right substitutes, but his tactics are pretty much always sound forehand.

I'm not sure why the "final" is relevant to the argument. The Mourinho I'm familiar with generally don't outmaneuver other teams tactically. He's trying to counter them instead (example: put Pepe high up the field and tell him to kick everything dwarf-sized that moves) and then he hopes that one of the players who are good for a goal per game will go and get it if they're provided with a couple of chances. That's what happened today in the first half. The "tactic" didn't last a full game and it won't last in a final either. Seven games out of ten (yes, it's an artificial number) Barcelona will walk away victorious because they'll always have their own game to fall back on. It doesn't matter to them in the end whether Mourinho's side is able to sneak a goal or two. They know that they could always score three or four in return because they're getting the best out of their players, as opposed to Mourinho who's focused on getting the best out of a particular system.

Wenger was perfect in those two games against Barcelona. Should have put the idea that he's an average tactician to rest there and then. He's an average match-day coach, but that's not the same thing.

😆 So you're a great believer in the "stick Chamakh on at 70 min if you're getting overrun by the recently promoted side" school of thought.

Wenger is a clueless ideologue, he sets out the team the way he thinks football should be played, not reacting to events on the pitch as they develop, disrespecting the opposition and making no attempt to counter their game preferring to fling stupid meaningless accusations like "anti-football" at them.

It's no wonder we win nothing.

Personally I think it is more arrogance on Wenger´s part than lack of tactical nous. I am convinced he firmly believes that there are only a select few opponents where he has to alter his "normal" game plan. That is obviously a mistake. When he does alter his game plan though, we are usually pretty well set up. This arrogance would matter less if he were good at making changes during games, but that is a really weak area of Wengers IMO.

Guardiola is also extremely good in big games. I know he's got a talented bunch of players but he wins more than his fair share of finals.

I like Guardiola and rate what I have seen of him, but you can't really judge that much about him as a coach based in what he's done with Barcelona. I think any manager worth his salt couldn't fail to win lots and lots of trophies.
