Di Natale scored again, predictable like a clock. He's the current top scorer in Serie A and will probably stay that way now. If he makes Udinese Serie A champions this year, at 34 years of age and in a season where they lost three key players without replacing them, it will probably be the greatest achievement I've seen during the 00s. They've got no business being two points behind the top when we're halfway through january. Hell, they would have topped the table if they'd won today.

That being said, we're in a position that few other clubs are without spending much money, surely using the money from the Fabregas transfers would catapult us to the top? I thought that was the plan when we moved stadiums.

Point is we've had teams in the not so distant past that would be right up there with the like of City and United. And teams a little further back that would eat them for breakfast.

True, but I don't see the point of looking at the league like that. The playing field is different every season, if every club ahead of us has become weaker then it may be a trend? It's certainly not deliberate. It's not like in 2003 when United won the league despite being inferior.

L'Équipe claim PSG have agreed a deal with Milan for Alexandre Pato. €35M - €28M up front and €7M in add-ons, with €130,000 a week for Pato.

Would have loved him here. Hope it's not true.

Gazzetta announcing the same thing. There has been strong speculation in Italy regarding this, and that Milan would use the money to get Tevez. Milan's president is apparently in England today to try to finalise the Tevez signing.

Yeah, I have followed the story recently because I had a feeling him leaving might be on the cards. That's why I'm inclined to believe this is true.

Don't like them but I dislike Liverpool more, don't want those scousers winning a trophy before us (if we win the FA cup this year then this is all won't matter).

Do you honestly think anyone would have gave a damn had we beaten Birmingham in the final last season and "ended our drought?". We might have, but the rest of football wouldn't have cared a jot and all we would have heard is what a shit trophy the Carling Cup is (and it is, further proven by the fact that Crystal will likely be awaiting Liverpool in the final).

The small time Scousers should be more worried by the seriously underwhelming team that they have and how that's going to shape up in the future.

We would have gotten that shit, it's only a mickey mouse cup, the milk cup. All of it and more would have been shoved down our throats had we won it in 2007 and last year but with a trophy is a trophy. We can't afford to turn up our nose at any competition and the value of how winning a trophy adds to a team's self belief.

Winning the Carling Cup on it's own might not mean much but a team winning something and gaining that self belief that they can be succesful will lead to more success and Wenger himself said as much.

Personally I'd rather have the "They've only won the League cup in the past 7 years" insults than the "They've won nothing, bunch of bottlers in the past 7 years" insults.

To each his own though.

We should have won it and it's disappointing that we didn't since we were in the final, but we would still have the same problems. We wouldn't have been a wholly different team. We wouldn't be favorites to pick up the PL title all of a sudden because the competition would still outgun us in wages, in transfers and in actual quality. People who think that it would all be dandy again because we've won the Carling cup are deluded. We could win that cup for the next ten years and it still wouldn't change anything in the other competitions.

Before both of those finals, I was hoping that if we had won it that Wenger would have gone on in the summer and strengthed the team so we could kick off and move on to better things. I never expected us to win the League Cup last year and then go on to do the quadruple this year without making major signings. I just envisaged it as a springboard for Wenger to make some signings and the players to gain some self belief.

Why?
He'd have pointed to trophies as proof that he was on the right track and continued on in that vein.

Edit: He continued anyway until the catastrophe that was last summer's transfer window happened and our early season losses forced a change in his strategy.

Pato has now refused to go to PSG, and Galliani (Milan's owner) has interrupted negotiations with Man City and left London where he was negotiating the Tevez transfer.
