has there ever been anything like that during the CL era? the 7th place team is the only one assured of a place in the knockout phase of the top club competition. is this what's needed to make this competition matter in the future?

Feeling pretty vindicated in my prediction when he was announced that decline, aging egos and player power would hamstring a younger manager like AVB at Chelsea.

Without writing them off they have a hill to climb, but it wouldn't really be surprising if he was gone in time for a couple of January panic buys. I don't think he has what it takes to turn it around as fast as Roman will decide to write him off.

Abramovich has cost them by chopping and changing too often.

In the past I would have said that the senior players would take control, go back to their old system of playing deep, organised, attritional football and they'd get themselves out of this mess. But I sort of think now that the senior players aren't quite good enough to turn it around in that way.

Spare me baby. It's not like I pretend to be a football knowall - a few other things, maybe.

I'm just relishing Chelsea's present troubles, which don't appear to have an immediate solution. I was far from the only Villas-Boas to Chelsea sceptic.

@Tim I don't think the core group there really want it enough anyway, and half of them are battling off-field issues as well.
