That's a good point about the back pass rule. Goalkeepers have to be good at a lot more things nowadays. I think it affected of defenders too, who are much more involved in progressing play than they ever were in the 90s when I started watching football.
Only reason I mention 10 years ago is because the goalkeepers that I watched growing up all seemed to retire at around that time. They were so superior to goalkeepers in the League right now. I'm talking about the likes of Seaman, Schmeichel, Neville Southall, Tim Flowers, Nigel Martyn and probably a couple of others I'm forgetting, but those guys were all proper goalkeepers, they organised their defence and commanded their box. Most of the goalkeepers I see in the League today are shot-stoppers and little else.
Although, as I said, I think Petr Cech is a bit of a throwback and Szczesny, whilst still having a lot to learn, is cut from that same cloth.
