You're right, and the thing that's so stupid about it is that this is EXACTLY what "every man and his dog" said would happen, because it's so bloody obvious. People talk about loopholes and stuff, but there's no weird and wonderful creative accounting or anything particularly clever going on. Basically, the owner has just sponsored the club for a bajillion pounds. It's a step up from buying an executive box for £50m a season, but not by much.

Well they can, they have a panel specifically for this sort of thing.

Even if you ignore the amount of the figure that is sponsering what is essentially a wasteland, it would still leave the deal almost double the previous record. How can you not be able to judge whether or not that's above market value?

Of course it´s a bullshit deal, and of course UEFA can disqualify it. Agree with Capi that it is unlikely that they will though.

Barcelona just signed a £25m shirt sponsorship deal; UEFA absolutely cannot say that Man City don't 'deserve' the same deal. That's opening a ridiculous can of worms.

So, ignoring the "wasteland", all they have to account for is £15m per year. A quick google search tells me that the highest naming rights package in world sport is $20m a year, that's around £13m. ManCity are in the champions league now and are challenging for the championship in the most viewed sporting league in the world; a brief of even mediocre talent can argue that case if UEFA are stupid enough to challenge it.

Absolutely right, Capi. Those are the figures that mid-ranking Americn tems have been able to get in recent years for stadium naming rights. Citeh are in good shape as far as defending their obscene package.

I bet, unlike us, they'll be able to re-negotiate that deal should someone like United shift the sponsorship goalposts again in a few years. Of course, it's not hard to negotiate with yourself

But I think Madison Square Garden and Barcelona are a tad more high profile than COMS and City. It's a bit like saying if a Bugatti Veyron can go for 2m who's to say a Ford Focus doesn't deserve the same. It also opens a ridiculous can of worms if it's allowed as they could pretty much sponser anything and everything to get by the FFP rules.

It's hard to get into it without a breakdown, but it's got nothing to do with what they deserve and everything to do with what you'd expect a club in their position to get. With Tottenham and more importantly Chelsea struggling to get even £10m a year deals, you can't say it's at market value.

The Madison square garden deal isn't for stadium naming rights as far as I know.

As I said, there is no legitimate way to argue against what they are doing and that's what it comes down to.

Where are these Cesc quotes you speak of?

As things stand, if we don't sell Cesc this summer he will walk out next season onto the pitch at the Emirates wearing the captain's armband, giving his all with the full support of the fans - can't say the same for Modric after those quotes. Delightful. 😃

Don't need quotes and the fans are already considering that Cesc should lose his captaincy. Not quite the full support that you speak of.

It would take a massive climb down from Tottenham to sell him, though. He can say what he wants but my money would be on him staying, and after a bit of a sulk or whatever he'll get back down to the business of playing football.

Don't agree. Cesc staying will be cause for celebration to the vast, overwhelming majority of fans. He'll still get the loudest cheer in the stadium next season, you know that.

It could still turn around, but bad words like that create bad blood between the player and the fan, who, at the end of the day are always going to side with their club. It's a slippery slope from there, as we have seen ourselves at Arsenal with Adebayor, and to a lesser extent, Nasri - and neither of them said anything nearly as inflammatory or direct as Modric.

I don't know enough about Spurs to know if he's as popular as Cesc is at Arsenal, or whether Bale or VDV, maybe King, are the crowd favourites over there. I do know those words will have done serious, possibly irreparable, damage, though. Fans don't forget players saying they want to leave and stinging criticism of their club quickly. Either way I'm pleased.
