Qs is right, the human factors would decide. However, it would put Fabregas's choice in the starkest possible light.

I'm not sure how that clause works if we're the club buying him back. I guess none of us is sure.

If I had to guess, it would be one clause or the other, not both. So we either buy him for the set amount in it's entirety or we let him go elsewhere and take our share. The "50% clause" will have a cap.

That sounds far more plausible than a scenario where we merely have to pay out £1 more than 50% of whatever a cashed-up club offers to beat their bid.

I'm pretty sure in an instance like that there would be a value assigned to the exchanged players that would still have to be paid.

Some reports mentioned a fixed price of 25m for us. It is not clear but there is definitely a clause like this as it has been reported by various sources since the day he was sold.

Fixed fees are nonsense. Obviously such a deal wouldn't be in place. Just think about it. Over 2 years so much can happen. He could've been injured for a season, he could've completely lost his form. I don't think we would've arranged a buy back option but getting a % of the sell-on fee effectively does give us an advantage in being able to afford him should Barcelona ever want to sell.

The Fabregas transfer was pretty unique though. Barcelona probably never expected these clauses to be used in a meaningful way when they finally snapped up their trophy signing. They still might not be used, mind.

Okay, it's about younger players but there you go. Almost every player who leaves Barca now has one, as well as those from Madrid and most of the big clubs. Barca wanted Cesc for a 'good' price, Arsenal wanted big money and compromise was met.

Yeah I am almost certain we get alot of privileges and sell-on benefits from cesc deal, mainly because

1) we really didn't want to sell
2) the fee was relatively cheap
3) Barca never expect he was ever gonna leave if they got him

Anyway for the record, I do rate Cesc as a person. 100% certain he won't join any other english club. He is no RVP.

It's a key distinction that its about younger players. But the key difference yet to be answered is that I'm doubting the likelihood of 'fixed' fee buy back pre-arranged years before a transfer takes place. Variable clauses are obviously more likely.
