I no longer think Wenger is looking for an Eeyore replacement; I think he still sees him as our number 1, and is instead looking to add more goals to the team from wide. Sanchez certainly fits that bill. Thinking he may pick up someone like Remy to 'challenge' Giroud though. This is what I think he has in mind:

Just read rawk and it seems they're very confident of Sanchez joining Liverpool because all it's going to take is a "sit down with Brendan".

Sure that might work against most teams but do we really want Theo leading the line?

The next phase will be finding a striker. That will be hard. Liverpool will take whoever becomes available (Benzema, Cavani, Balotelli, etc). They will have Spurs money with the offer of Champions League.

Exactly, we better be signing a good forward in addition to Sanchez or we'd be stuck with the same problem we face every year.

I'm fine with the forward line I have described, but we better bring in someone like Jackson Martinez to back-up Giroud. I seriously doubt we will find a No.9 who is a real improvement on Giroud at this stage. Make no mistake though, Sanchez would be a massive improvement on the characters who could otherwise be in the starting line-up

sanchez' attitude is the biggest boon. obviously he's technically very good and knows where the goal is, but he's got that nuggety persistence about him, and is something of a brute in the way he shrugs off challenges. very different presence to anyone else in the squad, and would slot into epl life nicely.

There's a few ways he could slot in, but I reckon Wenger would very likely play him wide and persist with his tall centre forward approach.

He's the kind of player you can expect to still be giving 100% late in a game where we are chasing a goal. Has a great workrate and seems to have a great mentality too.

I'd bet anything that Sanchez would play more than 0 minutes as a lone CF next season if he signs for us. It's a very natural continuation of the Gervinho-as-CF experiment.

Wenger played Arshavin as a centreforward for two months because he couldn't be bothered to keep a proper squad. It's not unreasonable to expect Sanchez to get a few minutes here and there. It's unlikely that he'll play there permanently though.
