Like who? Santos and Vermaelen are poor choices and it's not a question of replacing Gibbs for a 'few weeks' either, you can't seriously suggest that Santos and Vermaelen will cover Gibbs for the next three years. And Gibbs has his issues with injuries so this was a signing that needed to be made.
We've not signed Monreal on loan, he's going to be here a few years and he's a Spanish international playing for a very impressive Malaga side. Frankly, that's a better CV than what Gibbs has achieved so far.
I'm not frustrated at the notion we bought him instead of a striker but that we're willing to waste money on a low priority position yet we won't invest proper funds in a forward.
Yes, I agree. I don't think you can say we've wasted money until we've seen him play though.
