Gibbs shouldn't be playing week in week out anyway. Fullback is a very physically demanding position and an injury prone player is going to need his fair share of rest. Even look at Sagnas form since return. We should be rotating both full back positions a lot more regularly.

Hopefully Monreals attacking ability can help both Podoslki and Giroud continue their recent good form too.

Who? Vermaelen and Koscielny haven't covered themselves in glory when shoved out wide and have offered nothing going forward in those positions. Also the key issue is - how likely is it only going to be a matter of a few weeks with Gibbs? Approaching the business end of the season, we can't afford to take our chances with many more embarrassing defensive mistakes. In the last month we've pissed away 3 big games in the first 20 or so mins by basically having our defenders kick the ball in our net.

Funnily enough we probably have better cover up front than we do at LB. We can shift things around so that either Giroud, Podolski or Walcott can play upfront. And obviously I agree with everyone that says it shouldn't be 'either-or'.

Like who? Santos and Vermaelen are poor choices and it's not a question of replacing Gibbs for a 'few weeks' either, you can't seriously suggest that Santos and Vermaelen will cover Gibbs for the next three years. And Gibbs has his issues with injuries so this was a signing that needed to be made.

We've not signed Monreal on loan, he's going to be here a few years and he's a Spanish international playing for a very impressive Malaga side. Frankly, that's a better CV than what Gibbs has achieved so far.

I'm not frustrated at the notion we bought him instead of a striker but that we're willing to waste money on a low priority position yet we won't invest proper funds in a forward.

Yes, I agree. I don't think you can say we've wasted money until we've seen him play though.

Nothing at all wrong with the signing if he's as good as everyone says he is, always room for players who are better than those we already have

Santos was Brazil's starting left back when we signed him, not some two bob no mark from league two. It didn't work, so we remedied the situation by signing the second best left back in Spain. We'll see how this goes and if it doesn't work out, I pray to god that we look to remedy the situation again. This is how normal clubs build a proper squad.

I agree with this. Clubs shouldn't be chastised for trying to correct their faults, if only we did this with Almunia, Denilson, Eboue, Senderos and everyone else who were given chance after chance.

Marcelo had already taken over from Santos by the time we signed him. Santos was actually playing most of his games as a winger for Fenerbahce in his last season there. It seemed like a panic buy at the time for me.

Yeah, I don't understand this "zero sum" assumption. This should be judged independently. And as such, I can't see much wrong with it (in fact it exceeds my expectations by quite a bit - makes LB perhaps our strongest position).

I wonder how Gibbs must be feeling right now. I'm not feeling sorry for him at all but it's quite an interesting development for him, isn't it? If he has the right attitude he'll fancy his chance of competing and winning his place long-term. Competition for places always healthy.

Did Gibbs sign a new contract before Xmas in our big British contract offer? If so we're pretty much sorted at LB for the next few years now.

As for Santos I wouldn't object to him functioning as a back up left winger for the rest of the season. I'd be happier seeing him there than Shava.

Marcelo had been dropped for long because of his attitude. Santos started the Germany game literally 2-3 weeks before we signed him. And it was the other way around; Santos started as a winger at Fenerbache and then moved back.

Yes, there lies the inconsistency.

We've had a gap in our front three and yet have not filled that void. Monreal will probably be fine but it's a low priority. We're in danger of missing out on the top four and he'll make no real difference in rectifying that.

And it was the other way around; Santos started as a winger at Fenerbache and then moved back.

I never watch Fenerbahce, but I remember reading from their fans how he wasn't fit enough to last the full 90 even then and was used a lot in a more advanced position.

I'm not angry at signing him per se, I'm angry at the lack of signing other players in more important positions.

Got injured and that was him done.

Reason I remember the Germany game is because Schweinsteiger mugged him off properly for Germany's 2nd or 3rd. The Marcelo thing I know because he had just come off what many considered his best season and it was a shock that he got dropped.

A lot of dross have picked up caps for the Seleção in the last few years and Santos' selection is proof of that.
They even picked Ronaldinho for a game when he was so unfit, it was embarassing.
As to the signing, although i hoped for a DM, an Isco and a Cavani, i have to say i am pleased, as it strengthens us if he is as good as reported and something is better than nothing.

Don't care who we sign or sell it doesn't matter, at the moment we're in deep freeze stasis until turnip is gone its just a waste of Kroenkes money lol.

Surprised there are people unhappy with this signing. We are rectifying a problem position with a good player who might be better than our first choice currently. He is not some unknown who is going to play second fiddle. And he comes at a relatively cheap 8.5m.

We are not going to do much with the money saved anyway. We should be looking to spend more. Surprised people are complaining about the tiny weeny few millions bit.

Gazza, Gibbs done nothing to cement his first choice status this season? Have to say he is one of our best player this season. Just glad we signed someone good enough to seriously challenge his spot. Should always be signing good players to raise the challenge and make sure everything earn their place.

worried as his form has been known to dip. but looking forward to salsa-style football.

if he's as good as people say, then i'm all for this signing, as gibbs is a defensive liability and needs competition. i fully expect monreal to be our starting LB unless and until gibbs ups his game.
