Yeah, I feel the same way to some degree. For a very short while it was even on the IMDb top 250 I think. It's obviously not that good. I really enjoyed watching it though. It included scenes and performances that stayed with me for a long time.

Have you seen Silent Running by any chance? I always recommend it to people who want some real sci-fi. It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It's directed by Douglas Trumbull who made the photography for 2001: A Space Odyssey (as well as Blade Runner and, I think, Tree of Life). Joan Baez wrote a few original songs for the soundtrack. I usually point to it as some kind of reference for what I want from a science fiction film. Moon was the first thing that even came close to it in over a decade. I think I appreciate Duncan Jones's effort even more than I appreciate the final result of the film. I was hoping somewhere that its success would spur a resurgence of these kind of films, but so far not much has happened.

First trailer of The Hobbit has just been released:

The film itself is not released until December next year with the world premiere here in Wellington.

I haven't really been following it, and only just remembered they were releasing it as two films. Cash cow!

Curious as to how it'll work out - from the trailer it looks as if Jackson is reusing a lot of the magnificent shots from the LotR films in a slightly clichéd manner (eg the tracking shot from above of the travelling party walking across the NZ landscape).

That will either create a harmonious consistency with those films, or get really fucking boring.

Guillermo del Toro still has a writing credit. Wonder how his input will change things.

If I had to guess going by his previous work, I'd expect a bit more intimacy in the screenplay - more one on one scenes in enclosed spaces - and a more grotesque feel to the darker fantasy elements rather than mere "evilness".

The goblins will play a big role in the first movie, I assume, and bringing them to the screen a bit more vividly than LotR managed with the orcs will be pretty important.

a bit woried the hobbit could give audiences deja vu, as it is a similar "road movie" like fellowship of the ring. im a big fan of the boks so iI dont care if it is a bit samey. seeing these characters brought to life again is good enough for me. iI did notice the visuals and costumes are more "storybook" as opposed to the grittier look of the rings films, which will work well considering the lighter tone of the hobbit.

Just watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes, six months after the rest of humanity. I thought it was brilliant. Every now and then a film comes along that reminds you of the wonders of cinema. This was such a film for me.

saw Contagion last night.. it was pretty good, but to be honest, i guess I expected a tiny bit more. i thought it was going to take Outbreak and kick it up a few notches, but it was only slightly better for me (although, i did love Outbreak).. there were some parts that were left nowhere and some questions that were unanswered, but otherwise a decent watch

Thought Ides of March was a bit too West Wing to really stand out - decent enough though...

Kill List was great, I thought, especially considering it was mostly improv.

Ides of March was a really solid movie. I appreciated it a lot for turning out to be a little different from what I'd expected.

My Boxing Day flick this year was MI4. I liked it. Lots of fun, more than one excellent set piece, plot was a bit flimsy but who cares?

The best thing about LOTR was the war scenes this hobbit looks as though its gonna be the boring parts of LOTR "the hobbits"

Speaking of intense films, which I was, I also watched Jacob's Ladder over the break. Very good film, would have found the ending more of a gut punch had I not worked it out quite early on.

Ides of March in many aspects is just a lesser version of Primary Colors with Travolta and Thompson IMO.

Hanna - Disappointing. Thought it had all the promise of a brilliant action film, but it just failed to really go anywhere, or do anything.

We Need To Talk About Kevin - Excellent performances, and disturbingly bleak, but can't help but feel the book offers a lot more.

Adventureland - Sure it isn't everyone's cuppa, but i really enjoyed it.

Jacob's Ladder is a great movie. You have to be in the mood for it though.
