Just watched X-Men First Class. Preferred to all the other X-Men movies. Feels like this is where they should have started. Hopefully, they aren't discouraged by the low box office and continue the story in similar fashion.

Just watched Enemy Mine. It stars Louis Gossett Jr as a reptilian humanoid who gets pregnant for no reason. Needless to say it's the greatest thing I've seen for ages.

Can't be better than Hobo with a Shotgun, Klaus. No movie has ever painted a more terrifying, blood-drenched post apocalyptic world. :hat:

klaus, these movies sound hilarious, i just cant imagine giving each of them an hour and a half of my time.

Enemy Mine is a serious film actually — haven't seen it since I was a kid though. It's very, very moral, and not terribly good.

Hobo With a Shotgun wasn't really that good either.

@Cali I think / hope once the new Batman and the Avengers comes out comics movies die down for a while. Definitely a case of 'less is more' right now. I saw X-Men: First Class on a plane the other day, and although the triumvirate of McAvoy, Fassbinder and Bacon was quite fun, it isn't anywhere near as good as people have claimed to me.

So there are three films which basically underwhelmed me.

don't need to tell me that. i stopped after two viewings and 40 minutes of film. It's filled with gratuitous violence. Only Macbeth would finish the movie, justifying this by saying he is in blood stepped in so far that should he wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er

It's nice to see that Wolfgang Petersen followed up Das Boot with another high-end-project though. 😆

Yeah, look — a couple of times Hobo made me smile, but it really was a pure example of a bad genre, rather than a clever film that used elements of a bad genre.

@[deleted] Heh, yeah. Doesn't Lou Gossett end up exploding or something? I only dimly recall the details, but I know there's a lot of weirdness.

Ah, friends!
My girl gives me so much grief for watching this sort of thing. These are the kind of movies I grew up watching, and Lou Gossett is a childhood hero. I will def watch this one.

The only grindhouse film I liked was Planet Terror and then only cos its a zombie flick.

Saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy last night.

Brilliant.

Jo was angling to go and see Drive on Friday night, which I really want to see, but she'd already promised me that Friday night is (finally) Blade Runner night.

Watched Drive last night.
I thought the elevator scene captured the main character, a man who had about as much use for verbal communication as John Rambo. In that scene he was calculating and out-of-control, romantic and violent. All within seconds.
I enjoyed the movie. My girlfriend couldn't watch it. There are one or two particularly violent scenes

Really want to see Drive. Bullitt is one of favourite movies of all time, so I'm interested to see what they've added to it.

Tinker, tailor, Soldier, Spy is next on my list. Immense book.

Not bothered about Warrior. It's getting generally good reviews, but i think the trailer looks crap. Tom Hardy is a good actor, but I'll prob wait for the DVD.

Just got back from watching Warrior - Tom Hardy is a bit cool! Good, nothing original, but good.

@Cali Yep there are one or two fairly sickening moments, although most of the audience laughed during one of them.

Enjoyed the weird blend of hipster romance and ultraviolent thriller. Some of the shots are brilliant as well, and the music. Thought there was plenty of influence from Grand Theft Auto in there, crossing over camerawork, design and music, and obviously subject matter.

Pleased to read good things about Tinker Tailor and Drive. Plan on seeing those asap.

Tinker Tailor is an acquired taste. I liked it, found it engrossing right the way through, the friends I was with hated it, really hated it. It is very slow and very British, definitely not the thriller a lot seem to have taken it for. Thought Mark Strong was brilliant in it, even more impressive than Gary Oldman.

I saw Red State last night. Interesting film, a polemic against both mad religious types (a thinly veiled parody of that weirdo Baptist church that burns the Koran) and the US government. Worth a look, but I'd download or rent.
