I have to say, really enjoyed Super 8 - reminded me of the films I loved when I was a kid.

Didn't you feel it all ended a bit abruptly?

I liked the feel of it, thought it was like a mix of The Goonies, Stand By Me and The Third Kind. Just felt the story could have been a bit better, more clever/detailed. It was sort of glossed over a bit. The Train crash was amazing though, was open mouthed watching that part in the cinema.

The thing about Timberlake is that he seems to be a fairly model professional - he's not a scene-stealer. His character in Bad Teacher is repellent though. Dry-humping and that 'Simpatico' song. Ergh.

Didn't really think the story was any less 'deep' than any of those films. Very 80s Spielberg-esque, definitely schmaltzy, but serious undertones.

Didn't really love it for the story though, was mainly the Nostalgia. Agree on the ending, just kinda happened, without there being an obvious climax, felt a little rushed toward the end. Nothing like all the random bullshit of Captain America though!

Only thing I really liked/found interesting in Captain America is how on earth they made that guy look like a puny little geek?

Just watched No Country For Old Men - Pretty damn amazing actually. Couldn't take my eyes off it. Can't decide whether I love or hate the ending though.

No Country For Old Men is great.

The only criticism I have of it is that I think its view of the world as an uncaring dog-eat-dog nightmare is more than a bit skew-wiff if you take a step back. It's not like living in Texas will get you killed under ordinary circumstances after all.

watched Hereafter tonight.. was a pretty good, albeit a bit depressing, movie.. a departure from other Eastwood movies..

Anton Chigurh is one of the greatest villains I've ever seen.

I agree. Bardem excelled himself. In a strange way the character reminded me of Michael Myers from the Halloween films.

Pretty much the entire cast is superb in its way. Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, and Kelly Macdonald are also great.

We're all in agreement. fantastic movie. Bardem was remarkable, and the others put in a shift. Better than the other much-talked about movie at the time, There Will Be Blood. I still haven't managed to get through that flick.

There Will Be Blood is great as well in my opinion, but it's nowhere near NCFOM as gripping entertainment.

I got that as well - which is what made his moment of vulnerability all the more genius.

They're equally good imo. Also, as good Bardem is in No Country for Old Men, DDL was just as good as him in There Will Be Blood.

I finally watched After Hours the other day. Absolutely brilliant and amongst Scorsese's best work imo.

Working my way through Kurosawa's filmography currently too. I've already watched Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Yojimbo but I wanted more. Thus far I've only watched two, Judo Saga and The Most Beautiful. I enjoyed the former immensely, the latter, not so much.

I'd agree with that absolutely, but There Will Be Blood is a sprawling decades-long epic about how ambition shapes humanity, not a taut thriller that covers about three or four days of actual time. They're not easy to compare.

If you're getting into older Japanese cinema, I relatively recently watched Kenji Mizoguchi's 1953 film Ugetsu and it was really, really good. Yojimbo is definitely my favourite Kurosawa film - it's so pure and economical and Mifune delivers one of the most awesome performances of its type, ever.

only Japanese film I've watched lately was Mosura and Godzilla. wouldn't recommend it

Not Kurosawa but try a movie called Harakiri if you have time. Directed by Kobayashi.
