Well, the short texts are for all the gangsters, no?
Has a bit of a twilight feel, like it was written in a brooding mood.

Also saw 21 Bridges.. Fun, commercial movie but that boseman is so challenged genetically. Poor guy can never fill up a suit it looks like.

The Irishman: Good film, although very different from what I was expecting. In hindsight, it was always likely to be more dialogue-driven, considering the cast. (Jesse Plemmons 😆 )

For nostalgia, I'd love to see a version where Pesci and Pacino swap roles.

It's worth re-watching CASINO in light of THE IRISHMAN. I did this last night, and can confirm CASINO isn't quite as good. Agree with the points you made Klaus. The superimposed text detailing the final end of minor characters served to maintain an elegiac distance from the subject matter, and Pesci was absolutely brilliant. Pacino definitely the weaker of the leads.

Alright lads, long time! Those of you who still remember me anyway...

I've seen a few films recently, so here goes.

I thought Joker was excellent. I left the cinema unsure if I would ever watch it again, but found myself thinking about it for days afterwards.

Also managed to catch The Irishman in a cinema and absolutely loved it- I found the three central performances mesmeric and loved the way Scorcese took the story to its ultimate conclusion (even if the last 40 minutes or so could've been a little shorter)

Spirits In The Forest - one for Depeche Mode fans primarily but also works as an insight into how anyone falls in love with a band. Awesome live footage and some very cool fan stories. If you like that sort of thing.

The Lighthouse. Saw this in Berlin on my first night there last weekend and... well, it's beautifully shot and features two great performances from Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe, but I'm not sure I'll be watching it again. It features dialogue taken from the writings of Herman Melville and I genuinely found myself feeling a little mad by the time it finished.

Watched The Princess Bride yesterday, was a really enjoyable family movie. I've heard a lot about how it's aged very well and works on different levels (comedy, romance, adventure) and I have to say I agree. I've always wondered where some of those memes came from, but now I finally know. "you keep using that word", "you fell victim to one of the classic blunders".

If there's a film this year I'd tell everyone on this forum, on my fb friends list, on my WhatsApp groups to see it'd be Knives Out. Walked out of the cinema like everyone else, grinning from ear to ear. I'd never seen an audience here clap the end of a film of this sort.

It's a feel-good comedy drama social satire whodunit. It's also not really any of that. It's just great.

I second this, quite possibly my favorite film of the year. You could tell that every cast member had a lot of fun filming it as well. Between Looper, The Last Jedi and now this, Rian Johnson is on a serious roll. Too bad that the SW fandom has tarnished his reputation severely.
[spoiler]With such an all-star cast, I was (pleasantly) surprised to se de Armas front and center. She has a role in Fukunaga's No Time to Die as well, could be a huge six months for her. I guess this isn't really a spoiler, but the less you know beforehand the better.[/spoiler]

Didn't know what he had written, so checked him out. I love Misery and think Maverick is very underrated as well. All three movies are a blast. Must unfortunately admit that I haven't seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Liked it.
Nice pace to the film.
Acting was okay.
Don’t consider it in the Great category.
A fun night at the movies.

As for The Princess Bride, when it’s on cable, I will watch it more often than not.
Surprisingly, There is that slapstick comedy aspect to it that works so well.
Just an all round enjoyable film.

I think my favorite was "What about the R.O.U.S.'s?" "Rodents Of Unusual Size?" Felt so out of place, in a good way.

I watched Ad Astra yesterday and I tought it was incredible. Very Tarkovsky in its visuals and general mood. It's so rare to see hard science fiction done right on the screen. It might be my favourite film of the year.

The score is amazing too. I found an interview with Max Richter where he talks about how he used actual data from the Voyager 1 probe to create the music. Apparently Voyager has documented the density of the ionized gas surrounding it throughout its trip and how the craft gets showered with waves of electrons whenever it approaches any celestial bodies. These waves take place at frequencies the human ear can detect when they hit something. Richter used that data to build the electronic sound which is a pretty cool idea:

My first instinct about it was that there were really two separate storytelling languages in the film, one of which is to do with the personal and emotional dynamics between Roy and Clifford, the father and son. And then there was the other dimension, which was to do with the physical journey in space. These two things interact in a metaphorical way. I wanted to try to find a musical texture which could express that and speak to that, but also embody it in a very direct way. So then there was obviously going to be a narrative music, a music which speaks to the story elements and the psychology of the film, but also I wanted to use a kind of documentary approach to the sound itself. To the music itself.

I did that by thinking about the fact that the Voyager probes have actually made the trip that Brad’s character makes in the movie, and they gathered plasma wave data all the way. So we have 1’s and 0’s from every place depicted in the film. We got in touch with the University of Iowa who have this data and actually used the data to manufacture musical instruments, computer model musical instruments so that I could have kind of an illustrative, almost location sound aspect to the score. When Brad is going past Saturn, the musical objects you’re hearing are actually made from data gathered at the sites. I really enjoyed that idea.

So you have these two things kind of interacting throughout the score. You have a kind of orchestral, instrumental music which is to do with the kind of feeling dimension of the story, and then you have this sort of more abstract sound which is harvested from the site of the journey itself. And these two things interplay in the score.

Klaus, really interesting about the score. I thought it was brilliant. I hope you saw it on IMAX. In a year when we saw joker, it’s another great study on the what it means to be a man. There are some great visual metaphors - think of Pitt tumbling from the heavens to earth at the beginning and how that reflects his condition. Also how the vastness I’d physical space can mirror how interconnected people are. Finally, at a time when we’ve had Gravity, Interstellar and The Martian,no movie captures the serene splendour of space as perfectly as this one.

I watched it on a computer screen in a dark room, but it worked really well in that format too. It's such a personal, melancholic film.

Quite. Agree with all those points Claude. I think it's a really sincere and subtle tale about emotionally crippled and physically absent fathers, and the damage they inflict on their sons. "I know that dad, but I love you anyway" is one of the saddest lines I've ever heard. This is the second Ocar worthy performance from Pitt that I've seen in the span of a few weeks. He could end up getting nominated for best main role and best supporting role in the same year, and I kinda want him to win both. Has he ever been better than he is right now?

@Quincy check out MARATHON MAN, another Goldman special.

Really enjoyed KNIVES OUT, just a bit of fluff but the "donut hole" monologue towards the end was one of my biggest belly laughs of the year.

AD ASTRA was an amazingly beautiful film that I thought was slightly undercut by the simplistic lines of its father-son plotline. Still wonderful sf.

Looks interesting, will check it out. Guess I'll watch Ad Astra as well. Lost motivation for seeing it after reading very mixed reviews, but I'm a sucker for good visuals and I'm a huge fan of Pitt so it can't be that bad.

Just watched It Chapter 2 and it was pretty awful. The first one was decent enough, nothing more and I still don't know what the hype was about. The sequel is just a glorified Saw movie, not in terms of gore but regarding plot structure. For some reason they made it three hours long and the large middle part is very incoherent and just a poor excuse for lining up different "set pieces" after each other. I almost fell asleep. Always a bad sign, but especially so for a horror movie.
