Funny you should mention that. Started out as trash, especially the first half of season 1 iirc, and has eventually turned into a really enjoyable show once they stopped using every possible YA cliche. The last scene of season 5 is one of my favorite television scenes.
I really struggle with the YA genre. It was such a highly rated show so I was drawn by that. And at first I was taken in by the clever use of suspense, and the fact that the overall premise itself is an incredible starting point for a show. But after a while, suspense does not make up for poor character development, repetitive set pieces, overused character tropes, absurd science, etc. I heard season 2 was supposed to be worth it, but I quit halfway and read the rest of the plot for that season and was satisfied with my decision.
I had a moment in Lost a few years ago that taught me that you need to know when to quit. A wheel turned. And so did my stomach.
