I agree Coombs. Not only are films rich and many-splintered, the ways they go to work on the people that see them are extraordinary in their range.

Yet to see The Shape of Water but the one I'm really hanging out for is Annihilation. It was released Netflix only here yesterday but I'm going to hold off and watch it on the projector with a few mates later this week.

Watched that and The Cloverfield Paradox. The former definitely better than the latter but both an entertaining watch.

Any other good Netflix films? Is Bright worth watching? The one with Will Smith?

I'd recommend Sunrise, a neo-noir set in India which is on there I think (it is in Australia anyway). Interesting, atmospheric film. Sort of Stray Dog but about child trafficking.

Game night is one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite a while. And that's discounting my favoritism towards Jason Bateman. Belly laughs throughout.

Watched Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi's been reading some Douglas Adams, watching some Luc Besson. Bit of a bore overall, though.

Heard bad things about the new Cloverfield movie. Too bad, because I liked 12 Cloverfield Lane a lot.

Annihilation was a good movie, but it was creepy as fuck. 😆 They did a great job of making me feel how dangerous the shimmer was.

The three Cloverfield films are nothing alike though, just a really vague, overriding connection. I mean 12 Cloverfield Lane wasn't even going to be linked to the franchise initially. Also I'm not sure how the 2nd movie links with the others.

Anyway, the Cloverfield Paradox is pretty bad, completely illogical at times and borrows from some pretty tired and worn sci-fi concepts. Funnily enough, Life would have been a much, much better and cooler explanation for the creature in the first movie. But, it's not the worst way to spend an hour and a half of your time.

Annihilation was good. Ending was a bit meh but most of the film was well made I thought, good atmosphere to it

I didn't really get the ending. I read this though, and thought it was a nice way to think about it.
[spoiler]And so it is that by duplicating the genetics of Lena, the Shimmer not only doubles her physicality, but also her psychology: It is Lena’s urge to destroy her marriage, to enter the Shimmer, to continue on to the lighthouse when others want to turn back, which compels the Shimmer to, in essence, commit suicide. Fueled by Lena’s violence and anger after she flees the lighthouse, her double does in actuality what Lena already did in spirit; she burns her home down. And so also like a species destroying the planet that gave it life, the double casts fire to the belly of the beast, seemingly destroying all of the Shimmer that has spent years growing in size and complexity.[/spoiler]

Mmm … I definitely think the premise (of both book and film) is this brilliant symbolic counterpoint between the "alien zone" or "dream quest" narrative, and the alienation of a failing relationship. But I don't think the story is meant to tie off as neatly as that theory suggests.

Enjoyed the hell out of Ready Player One. It definitely had its flaws, the most annoying one being how much exposition they felt they hade to include. "Oh, it's that character!"

It wasn't anything more than a popcorn flick, but a very good one imo. Spielberg's set pieces are great to watch. I had to watch it in 3D which I don't like, but it actually fit this film well.

Watched Annihilation. Sad that it didn't make theaters internationally. Well-packaged sci-fi. Thoughtful, good twists. Definitely recommend it

Saw Shape of Water in the end the other day.

Yes, it's good, it's ok, it's moving in places. I found it disappointing. Controversial opinion maybe, but I'm not even sure Del Toro knows what film is good for. He's making curios, furniture, conversation pieces.
