Ridiculous retcon of the HP mythology too. Obscurus... kindly fuck off with that nonsense.
I felt it was hard to tell what the point of the film was, exactly. It fails monumentally as a setup for Grindelwald's war (which was waged almost exclusively on mainland Europe, which makes the American setting of the film even weirder), it doesn't involve a youngish Albus Dumbledore at all, and Newt as the protagonist is just inexplicable. He's not an important figure in the broader arc of history. Why pick his point of view if you're going to tell this particular story? Redmayne did pretty well with the script he was given, but then again playing autistics is kinda his forte. Bloke badly needs a new trick.
Ever since she approved of The Cursed Child I've been convinced that Rowling's lost the plot. Fantastic Beasts didn't exactly change that perception. I used to hope that she'd pick up the wizarding world again and write the marauders backstory at some point. Now I just want her to stay as far away from it as possible. The little bits we got in the books are too good to be ruined.
