Heard that suicide squad was significantly re-cut following the critical failure of BvS and it wasn't improved by doing so.

That's a shame, I don't remember them being the same writers?
I heard the slamming of the Snyderisms of BvS plus the relative acclaim of Deadpool led them to increase the humour quota in their reshoots a couple of months ago. However, the press also seemed to beat up the reshoots even taking place as a big story, when it's a fairly normal practice.
I doubt Suicide Squad will be actually good, but my sense is that it's going to be critically praised or at least condoned because the DCU is "due" a success.
But the Suicide Squad movie has had nothing but negative press since they started casting and releasing images. I do not think they will get any respite. In fact, it would be very easy for critics to lump it wit the mess that was Batman/Superman.
As for Will Smith, if he wanted a superhero role, I'm surprised he would take something so minor. He's already flopped as that drunken superhero, but still..
Hancock will be a cult classic of sorts. This Suicide Squad role? Doubt it.
The problem with BvS was not its dourness or even the liberty it takes with the source material. I think Watchmen is a classic myself, despite the similar accusations of a lack of humour, but BvS is nowhere near it in quality.
Batman vs Superman was better than Age of Ultron, in my opinion.
It's an absolutely terrible film, of course, an awful one even. But the real dealbreakers were the long breaks for universe and franchise setup in the screenplay.
Watchmen was nicely made, the change to the ending and the generally lurid rather than bathetic violence were a problem relative to the source.
If I had to have a blind date with either a Snyder joint or a Whedon joint, I'd take Snyder every time.
I quite like Ayer as a writer and a director and I'm not confident in a committee improving upon whatever he had come up with.
I heard that too, Burnwinter (increased humour), but I've also heard that they have played around with what they already had and fucked up the pacing entirely.
BvS is the worst superhero movie I've seen since Iron Man 2.

For me, the ending improved on the source. The differences in tone in terms of the violence, the characterisations etc did not spoil anything. Watchmen ranks together with Dark Knight as the best superhero flicks, although perhaps Watchmen is a kind of a different category.
Baring the one 'romantic sorta' scene which was very cheesy, I too enjoyed the watchmen. Think it is underrated as far as superhero movies go. Big fan of David Ayer and eagerly awaiting SS. I remember the rumor was that Deadpool's success affected the filmmakers and they decided to incorporate more humor at the expense of overall darker theme earlier.
BTW i finished Bebop and i love it! Seriously it is a fantastically well made TV series and made me a fan! It has that quaint quality that makes it a classic and will appeal to people for many many years.
We have a TV threa d for those anime shows you're talking about.
I neither like nor have anything against Ayer. If Suicide Squad turns out as End of Watch and Fury, both slightly above average, I'm happy with that.
Burnwinter wrote:Yeah, didn't mind it. Cate Blanchett was good in it, slightly marginal concept and film that attracted a bit too much praise I thought.
It was another movie that i gave up on. Though i did catch on the 'A streetcar named Desire' reference very early and i could 'see' what woody Allen was trying to do. Still i thought it was silly in a typical 'woody allen' sort of way.
It is part of my list of movies which IMO are 'nowhere near as good as made out to be'.
Some of them are
Blue Jasmine
Argo
3:10 to yuma
True Grit
hanna and Alice
Seven psychopaths
The man who wasn't there
etc
Yeah, there are some pretty marginal Coen Bros films. Argo was pap. 3:10 to Yuma I liked for its classicism.

I just searched. Couldn't find anything relevant. Except 'current TV' threads. If there is, my bad!
Thread has the brilliant name 'One more on the telly'.
Yeah i found that. i though it was what was on telly 'now'....

David Ayer has nailed only one movie and that was 'Training Day'. Everything else he has ever done is ranging from meh to just slightly above average, mainly because he could never get the balance between cool and realistic right after TD. 'End of Watch' is overrated - it has an ok script, but so much of the dialogue and acting was unrealistic and i hated the directing style of this film. 'Fury' was good up until the final act, but i wished it would have looked even more bleak and taken some even bolder and darker turns story wise.

And he only wrote the script for Training Day, Fuqua directed.

Cannot disagree more. Not only was EOW a thoroughly enjoyable movie it was extremely well made. Also Fury was really well directed and training day had such power packed screenplay!

Which is a complete anomaly for Fuqua himself - rest of his stuff is ranging from absolutely awful to barely ok. I really do not rate him at all. People were singing praises to 'Southpaw' and 'The Equalizer' and i was heavily disappointed in both. Especially 'Southpaw' was ridiculously overacted and directed. I should have known better of course, given that he had previously dropped one of the biggest turds in 'Olympus Has Fallen'.
