Studio Ghibli have produced, at the bare minimum, five films superior to Akira, Pretty much everything by Satoshi Kon, Black and White, 5 centimetres per second and a fair few others. I'm a big fan of Sword of the Stranger, which I randomly watched one day and was surprised to find was a break out hit.
In saying that, I think the medium's big strength is found more in the tv shows anyway. Recently watched a few episodes of Death Parade and thought it was incredible, but can't say if it holds that pace for the whole series.
