I didn't say it earlier it but i believe the word i had in mind was vomit inducing. I gave up around the 80 minute mark..

😆 Martin McDonagh's done some pretty serviceable stuff, so just put it down as a screenplay experiment gone horribly wrong, I think.

EDIT: I don't think i like him. In Bruges was fun, but in a neurotic way. Not a big fan of that kind of comedy

Yeah, didn't mind it. Cate Blanchett was good in it, slightly marginal concept and film that attracted a bit too much praise I thought.

Studio Ghibli have produced, at the bare minimum, five films superior to Akira, Pretty much everything by Satoshi Kon, Black and White, 5 centimetres per second and a fair few others. I'm a big fan of Sword of the Stranger, which I randomly watched one day and was surprised to find was a break out hit.

In saying that, I think the medium's big strength is found more in the tv shows anyway. Recently watched a few episodes of Death Parade and thought it was incredible, but can't say if it holds that pace for the whole series.

Ta. Haven't watched a non-Ghibli anime in years but I'm down to check something new out.

Two series I once watched that were brilliant were Serial Experiments: Lain (highly creepy and prescient sf about online culture) and Haibane Renmei (school fantasy loosely inspired by Murakami's novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World).

Yeah, I don't watch a huge amount of anime these days, largely because I can't devote my full concentration and time to reading subtitles (most of my tv time is more or less background noise now, while I work or waste time on the internet).

Would definitely recommend Sword of the Stranger as one that may fly under the radar and in terms of mainstream series', I would go with the new version of Full Metal Alchemist (think it's called FMA:Brotherhood); although it is sixty odd episodes long.

Death Note is a pretty incredible show too if we're talking mainstream. It's only half as long as Full Metal Alchemist and I believe the episodes were shorter.

That is the only anime i have watched apart from Akira and i agree it was incredible! Absolutely loved it!

I am 6 ep's into Cowboy bebop and its OKAY. Till now i would say Deathnote was far superior to Cowboy Bebop. Spike (the lead character in CB) is way too cool though!

Death note massively tailed off after episode 25. FMA kept the quality up for longer imo.

Cowboy Bebop is great but you need to look at it in the context of anime in the 90s. A lot of the design and themes were Westernised which made it much more accessible to a wider audience and influenced the next generation of anime. Bit like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Not a fan of Anime but I've read a lot of Manga back in the day. Read FMA again earlier this year after some ten years of reading it for the first time and I was surprised how good it still was for a Shonen Manga, was a decent read even discounting nostalgia.

Best one I've picked up is Eden - It's an Endless World, don't think it's been animated though. Think it would be classed as cyberpunk but I'm not sure it's enough to accurately describe it, what I found most intriguing about is was its gruesome realism and what I consider pretty accurate predictions of what political and societal unions there'll be in the future, essentially a postapocalyptic Cold War with several players leading their proxy wars all over the planet.

I think the only manga I ever read end to end were Hikaru No Go and Hunter X Hunter. Both were pretty much a cheesefest to be honest. 🙂

Just to clarify, I meant the animation of Monster rather than the comic.

😆 Never said otherwise. I read them because of a girl, which was also the reason I learnt to play go in fact. Back in them days …

If we're talking cyberpunk manga then Tsutomu Nihei's Blame! has to be mentioned. It's brilliant. It basically hammered out the aesthetics for a whole new generation with its megastructures full of dark, corrupt spaces and organic machines. He made a prequel thing called NOiSE too. I think they're about to turn both of them into an anime.
