Civil War could be renamed to Iron Man 4. Lol.
Really enjoyed it. I have ever really been drawn to the Captain America character, but this movie is good enough to be my second favorite in the marvel universe after Winter Soldier. Only annoying thing was Panther's accent.

I enjoyed it too. Spider Kid was a real highlight for me. Very cheesy. I just kept laughing during the epic battle at the airport. Might have to finish watching Ant Man as well.

Just watched Deadpool. That has to be the worst bullshit I've seen all year. It was embarrassingly bad.

I haven't watched it yet but that's surprising. What was wrong? Seems like it will go down as one of the best rated comic book movies around.

It was spectacularly unfunny, and not in the so-bad-it's-good kind of way. It was just misfiring on every cylinder. What an utter flop.

Looks like a train smash from the trailers to me. I've avoided that and Superman.

Sorry, but none of you get to lecture me on lowbrow. I probably spend more on comic books in any given month than most of you do in a decade. Deadpool deserves contempt because it fucked up the easiest concept to do right since Transformers, not because it's based on a superhero comic. It's a movie about dick jokes for people who don't like dick jokes, written by talentless fucking hacks and streamlined for the same kind of bland audience that every average studio product out there is aiming at. The words toothless and boring spring to mind.

I didn't feel so strongly about it, I don't care about the comics for one thing.

Just thought it was pretty weak sauce to pile in all that metafiction, chronological shifting, dramatic irony, and fourth wall play and still produce such a traditional, banal bad boy meets whore with a heart of gold who kicks ass on the side, endures suffering, rescues girl, becomes hero storyline, with all the algorithmically calculated "beats" …

It was a nothing, a real one star made for TV experience just as worthwhile as an episode of How I Met Your Mother.

Its not about low brow, I've seen you rave about some awful low brow shite, its about blockbusters. Which you completely back up in this post.

Burns there are loads of really good episodes of HIMYM (as well as loads of equally shit ones).

I watched a couple of episodes of that show, but I didn't like the cast much.

Anyway, I'm not going to demand everyone agrees with me on this one, I'm just saying that once you scrape off its thin veneer of épater la bourgeoisie, Deadpool's basically sitcom techniques bolted onto a shit action romance.

Sitcom stylings rarely make the jump to feature length smoothly even when the material's top tier (eg Thick of It transitioning to In The Loop—yeah it was fun, but it just felt ineluctably small screen, small scope).

Deadpools smaller scope was a plus point to me, let the Avengers and Superman deal with saving the world, this was a smaller more personal story. Sure it hit all the superhero tropes, its a superhero movie what did you expect? And I liked the humour, it was sharp and had a good gag density. Certainly one of the better hollywood comedies of recent years. The movie delivered on my expectations anyway.

By scope I didn't mean the number of buildings destroyed … I'm happy to criticise any franchise entry reeling off a set of "tropes" … the humour was bang average … Hollywood comedies suck …

But the movie delivered on my expectations anyway, I'll give you that. 🙂

Watched Ex Machina at the weekend. That Oscar Isaac is a bit of a talent, I think.

Red band trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's new one. Looks sort of interesting, aesthetically similar to Only God Forgives but way less masculine. Very sleazy and trashy, seems to be a touch of Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis about the premise, and there's also a little nod to Repulsion in there in the trailer.

Seen Civil War, its really good. The action is great, the villain is much better than other MCU films and all though there was a lot in it they got value out of most of the added characters. Very good, quite a difficult feat the Russos had to pull off and they did a great job.
