Watched The Bourne Legacy tonight. It was surprisingly good. The only really weak moments in the film were the ones where they tried to tie it together with The Bourne Ultimatum. They could have just cut out Edward Norton's role altogether. The scenes with Renner up in the snowy mountains were bloody excellent though.

I didn't like it much Klaus, but it had a few strong points.

The scenes with Renner in the mountains were an idea of what The Grey could've been like if it hadn't been crap. One man against the elements and the beasts of the wilderness. And the cabin sequence with that actor from Drive was truly excellent - in fact, a whole film based around escalating tension between those two characters would've been terrific, something a bit like "How I Ended This Summer".

I actually thought the parallel timeline with the Bourne Ultimatum was interesting, although it did make the whole film seem a bit like fanfic, stuck in the cracks between Bourne canon. A Jeremy Renner Bourne Mary Sue.

But my major criticism would be that the plot's international transition was very sloppy plot-wise, it slackened the pace and turned the whole shebang into a fairly unconvincing caper film. There was an exoticist overtone about the closing scenes I didn't like.

Saw The Imposter and Shadow Dancer last week. Both well worth a look, The Imposter marginally more so if only for sheer ´WTF!´ factor..

The Imposter is really good. Only downside was they failed to deliver the final 'reveal' they hinted at rather unscrupulously 🙂

I saw Moonrise Kingdom on Friday night. It's charming in the extreme. Wes Anderson is refining a single, very specific aesthetic with film after film. He's become a bit predictable, so I wasn't sure I was going to like this one, but in the end it really won me over. Great date film.

I saw La Joie de la Grazie ma Familia last night and it was enchanting masterpiece. Truly a breathtaking piece of avant-garde nouveau Mangilard cinema.

I think what we're seeing with the pre-eminence of Joycelean, morally androgynous male leads in Morrissey's recent films points to a renaissance in contemporary existentialism. The days of the faux-masculine, joyless tyro are reaching their zenith. You watch a film like that and it really makes you appreciate that we're on the cusp of an ebbing tide of Hollywood flotsam that's been crushing the quivering heart of our commonality for far too long.

The scene with the banana and Debrenteau thrusting his crotch into the earlobe of his half-sister's mentally disabled cousin-brother was an incredibly powerful, subtle bludgeoning of one of the most unnerving and basic truths of our plagued souls. It is so artfully delivered against the backdrop of the bourgeoisie inner city Paris turmult (which is stunningly recreated through the metaphor of the rotting carcass of the Tyrannosaur) that you can't miscomprehend the message.

Yes, but what would Lacan say about 'La Grazie …' Pep? He'd be disgusted and delighted all at once, as it reifies his concept of the objet petit a by depicting the near erogenous displacement of the fabric of 'gender' against the plane of sex, but then fails to follow through on its dialectic promise in certain key ways, finally reducing the irreducible difference at the core of gender-as-lived to a farce.

Indeed, the very scene you dwell upon, featuring Debrenteau, the banana, and the lobal frotteurism struck me as a wasted opportunity—the fruit itself rendered gapingly vaginal by its perfunctory visual counterplay with Debrenteau's foppish moustache, despite Morrissey's brilliant conjugation of an almost hackneyed mise-en-scène ('man' standing, 'woman' crouching) with, liminally but all the more prominently for that, a puckish allusion to the tacitly homosexual contrapposto of classical sculpture.

I will agree with Pep on one thing—it was a haunting jigsaw piece drawn from the increasingly intractable puzzle of eroticism. Actually, two things, because the T-Rex carcass was really a nice touch.
