With the consoles increasingly moving towards common hardware and games getting multiplatform releases, it doesn't really matter whether both XBox and PlayStation are both in the market anyway does it?
If one console vendor decided to jack their prices someone else could just enter (or re-enter) the market with a cheaper version of the same thing.
Game developers are central, which is good I think.
The console options are crucial too. I'll never buy an Xbox for example, I don't want to pay for Xbox live! If I buy a game I don't expect to have to pay a subscription just to play the online multiplayer modes.
Console exclusives are important too though, people used to buy an xbox just for halo, or a PS just for GTA for example. They're both going cross-platform though, so it doesn't matter as much.
PS3 was a much better choice than the Xbox 360 due to the bluray player though, especially upon release.
