Thinking of a way how to save the season (without sacking Wenger)....?

The players need an immediate sense of structure. Wenger needs to come up with a story about how they're going to turn their form around and build on whatever success we achieve in the next couple of matches. It's not acceptable to be asked in press conferences what his approach will be and reply "I don't know."
The older players who are slowing down due to fatigue need to be rested whenever possible (including being subbed off) and given a clear indication when a proper period off will be forthcoming. Then they need to be told that when they are on, we need 100%.
Give the fullbacks stricter constraints. We're not getting much from them going forward so they need to be playing with discipline and with the percentages at the back.
Use Theo on the right, but rotate Podolski with Gervinho as long as both continue to be a problem. Giroud should be protected as he's worked hard and done more than any other forward of late, but he needs to stay in and around the penalty area 100% of the time.
Young, peripheral players in their early 20s like Coquelin and Ramsey need to be told that they're playing for their Arsenal futures right now.

January:

Re-sign Walcott and Sagna.
Sign a good PL standard goalscorer with lots to prove at top four level, eg Demba Ba
Sign a strong and physically robust, technically adept, ball-carrying midfielder.
Freeze out the non-contributors. Either sell them or, given that won't be possible with some, stop giving them bench time.

I believe that's what my handwaving about "sense of structure", "when they are on we need 100%", "playing for their Arsenal futures", "playing with discipline and with the percentages at the back" amounts to, yeah 🙂

I can see where Wenger's in a bit of a bind. He can't flat out tell our current crop of players that they're much worse than we used to have without calling his own judgement into question - and a major shift to simplify our game would be an admission of that.

He should bite the bullet. Cazorla's no Fabregas, Giroud's no Van Persie, Podolski's no Pires (or even Nasri), and Walcott's the same player he has been for years, he just looks better because everyone else on the pitch has dropped a notch.

Hey we all know him and his style of play is the problem and getting rid of him is the best solution, but this is an interesting mental exercise.

I agree with the Burnwinter 4 step plan. Of course, the plan has one problem. It presupposes that Wenger will find his balls and buy big name players. That he will park his ego long enough to bring in some stars he has not had a hand in creating. Players who will earn more money than him. No. Not happening.

The ideology of the board and owners, in which Wenger is a willing and complicit collaborator, is our biggest problem.

The inadequate money being spent is the next biggest, and it's an inescapable consequence of that ideology.

The quality of the players is the next biggest, and it's an inescapable consequence of our spending. We can't sign top talent, and we shed our best players because we don't spend on wages in line with our rivals.

The nature of the football we have to play in order to get the best out of the quality of the players we've got is the only problem we can alleviate in the short term. If you assume correctly that Wenger isn't going to be sacked, that's where this thread has its focus.

In previous seasons you probably would have said that taking the players available as a given, Wenger did well with what he had. This season, it seems we're even getting less than we should be out of what we've got.

We need a Song replacement or a Fellaini. Then we can start talking about 4 4 2. These imps won't cut it.

United get by on a worse midfield than that. We need more strikers in and around goal.

And Fellaini is not a midfielder.

Depending on what you do, you can play Fellaini as one of your CMs or as a support striker.
Each passing day, that Song trade looks increasingly foolish. We have lots of decent players but they don't fit any formation well. It's a failure in general management

We should play a 3-5-2. Another CB to solidify us through the middle, push our FBs a bit further up to keep width better while still keeping three CMs, and last but not least play with 2 forwards.

Having both our FBs a bit further up along with appropriate drilling should also help us win the ball back earlier. Our pressing is dire as is.
