Potential is one thing, but they're far ahead of us at the moment. Catching up with them is hard and it takes time.

One thing's for sure- them winning titles and us scraping for 4th isn't going to speed up that process.

That much is obvious, isn't it?

We're playing it safe, keeping ourselves a lot of free money in the bank, in case we should not qualify for the CL, while they don't mind their huge debt and spend big if necessary to keep up their winning streak.

We can only hope that once our debt gets cleared, our major sponsorship deals have been renewed and the FFP kicks in, something changes. Not too rosy a prospect for us in between that though.

Anybody else here that watches the Breakdown regularly? Was bad enough seeing Adrian Clarke once in a while as a guest on the Fans' Forum, but seeing him regularly does my head in. He smiles ALL THE TIME!!!! It is bloody confusing when spoken language and body language doesn't match! Also, I don't trust people who smile excessively...

I cannot see why she cannot see the reason stated by the club.
There are a lot of other things negative about the club right now and everything else which seems to be trivial is getting added to the list.

you're right, it's all about our lack of ambition. united has pulled ahead of us because of our club's failure to capitalize commercially from the incredible dynasty that was the invincibles.

it doesn't take much to raise commercial revenue - you just have to win. look at chelsea, not a top club at all before abramovich. once they win and keep winning, they are immediately considered one of europe's elite. we were in that position, but blew it.

the bright side is it's not improbable to get back there. we win the league once, and we're the top team in the best city in europe, with a cash cow of a stadium, and the global reach of the premier league ensures that we'd be extremely attractive to sponsors. but we need to win first. no one wants to spend 30m to associate themselves with a loser.

but going for the league requires ambition. selling van persie and replacing with giroud.. that's the move of a team that's too chicken-shit to try to win the league, and would rather guarantee 4th place instead.

We managed to build a stadium because of it.

United have always been ridiculously far ahead on the financial side. They've been the richest and most well-run sports franchise in the world for nearly two decades. The fact that the Glazers created a holding company and ridded it with debt from the aquisition doesn't change that. Manchester United as a club regularly make huge profits without selling anybody. We ran at a loss last year if you discounted player sales.

Most of our commercial potential is tied up in long-term sponsorship deals at the moment. In retrospect it was a shit decision but we all know that. This idea that we used to be level with United financially is not true though. It was not true back in 2004. It has never been true.

Our board spent too much time and energy squabbling and looking after their own interests and not enough of either on Arsenal's interests. They had a plan to build the stadium and increase their share value. I dont think they thought much beyond that.

Yep. I think they figured it would sort itself out. To be fair it was pretty hard to foresee the huge increase in shirt sponsorship deals, or a wage bill that would more than double itself in seven years, but the fact that they figured there would be £150 million from property development to reinvest in the team speaks volumes. We didn't end up with even half as much and it took several years longer to pay off than originally planned.
