Been to Holland several times as I have family there.

Germany just seems so well organised. Not just talking about football but their economy and structure. And it's not like you can say 'oh well so is Denmark and Sweden' etc because their population is huge; 80 odd million people.

Yeah, very folksy and friendly people. Remind me of Danes a bit in that respect. Not sure what you mean by character but there are some less flattering traits in the culture. Like inherent sexism for instance (which, again, reminds me of Denmark...).

I'm usually there twice a year at least. I have a friend who lives in Hamburg and I try to visit her whenever I can. It's a beautiful city down by the water. Looks like a modern European metropolis full of conflicting architecture. She used to live in Gelsenkirchen for a while. I managed to catch a few Schalke games there. Their stadium is huge.

It's only true for certain parts of Germany though. It's divided into various regions which are practically governed autonomously. Some of them are thriving despite the global economy. Others are finding it a bit harder to get by.

I've never been there myself but their economy is a big mess. The economic upswing after the reunion failed to materialise for a number of reasons. I remember reading an article in Spiegel a year or two ago which presented some chilling facts about shrinking cities and an economic output which was roughly two thirds of West Germany's per capita. It might have been on the international section of their website. I'll see if I can find it...

It's not unreasonable to assume that it has had a significant effect on sports, culture and other things which are important to a healthy society but not to one where people are struggling just to get by.

Partly because he's a lesser player at this point in his career. He's playing with lesser teammates too, though. Dortmund are better on practically every position. Isco and Pellegrino are still the two biggest reasons that Malaga have turned their season around in such an unexpected way. They wouldn't be in the QF at all if it weren't for him.
