Its not easy for them. Firstly, the have alot of debts and no money to really splash on a big player. Secondly, their style meant very little top players could go there and be really comfortable or even of use for them. Just look at how Alexis and Cesc is looking out of place there, and Ibra as well in the past. They are the most inflexible team in terms of style, only plan A and thats it. Rijkaard team in the past with Henry and Eto'o was far more versatile.
Yeah, that was my secondary point. The 2009 team was a perfect blend of power, finesse and ability. The fact that they play a style which marginalises all the players they sign should have acted as a warning signal.
Also, how bad are their accounts? Their signings over the years have not been cheap and most of them have been a waste.
You can understand their playing style because it is by far the best world football has seen, but yeah they should have seen it coming. Still, add Messi in and they can easily win the UCL again.
Meanwhile they are over 500m in debt and only second to United in terms of worst debts. Their spending haven't been anything of shrewd and prudent of late, which adds to that. They kept going to luxury buys, (alexis and cesc) and firmly neglected their weak areas which is their defence. Now they are only trying to promote from within mostly, which takes time because even though their youth players are quality, they lack experience at top level.
