For me it is linked to the difficulty in assessing how strong this Arsenal squad really is. Too many unknowns still!
Will Podolski and Giroud become reliable goal scorers?
Will Gervinho kick on and have a better 2nd season in the PL?
How much will AOC be a factor this season?
Will Coquelin stake a claim for himself in the team?
Will Diaby stay fit? If so - what will he bring to the team?
What can Wilshere contribute with?
Will the positives regarding keeping team shape from the first 2 games continue when we play better teams?
And on, and on, and on...

My understanding is that Arsenal were offered Essien - and not the other way round. They politely declined but was never on today's agenda

No but they've all cashed in their shares and made very healthy profit for themselves doing so. While doing everything in their power to make the club look as economically healthy as possible. I somehow don't think these things are all coincidence.
