Freddie was definitely a clinical finisher in his prime, and might still be. For many years he couldn't hit a barndoor though. It took my dad half a decade to forgive him for more or less singlehandedly knocking Sweden out of the Euros 2000. Missed open goal twice when left alone with only the posts to beat.
I think finishing is a skill that can be taught to some degree. You might not be able to chip balls like Bergkamp but if you want it badly enough you'll improve eventually. Gervinho is pretty terrible at the moment but it's not unreasonable to think that he'll become good enough to put away normal chances at least.
