Then again, what about the situations where our players have stayed on their feet and scored a goal as a consequence? There's an obvious imbalance in those stats but it's hard to make too much of them without analysing each situation individually. My gut feeling is that Rooney and Young in particular are winy cunts who throw themselves around in the penalty box like wounded animals. I remember at least a couple of instances from last season when Young could have scored easily but opted for a dive instead.

Since the start of last season, can you think of 11 incidents where an Arsenal striker would've won a penalty by diving but opted to score instead?

There's a few possible reasons for the discrepancy, but nothing yet that would disincline you to believe United get far more friendly refereeing decisions than we do.

I'd be interested to know how many of those penalty decisions came when United were behind, or level pegging in the last half hour of a match.

Nope, but if I'm perfectly honest I can't think of 11 incidents where we should have had a penalty either.

It might be partly related to playing style too. Nationalities in the squad makeup probably play a small part. I'm sure United are given a lot of favours too, intentionally or otherwise. They always have been. But it doesn't really explain City and Chelsea.

I'll say this though: Generally top teams always get favoured by referees, and that includes Arsenal to some degree. At least compared to the Aston Villas and the Sunderlands out there. It's not exactly surprising to see the three league winners from the last three years topping this type of statistic.

May be stretching a bit here, but is it not likely that the top teams get into opposition penalty areas the most often, and so there are simply more opportunities for penalties to be won? Although I'm not sure United would be in opposition box 4 times as much as we are.

Agree with all of the above - to my mind Chelsea, City and United are up there because they dominate matches and they're overburdened with skilful attacking players, marquee names who attract attention and look to win penalties.

Just don't think it explains all of the difference, does it?

Of course it is Invis, I was just going to say that, the top sides have the top players most of the possession and attack more, of course they're going to get fouled more.
But Klaus is also right too, in football squeaky wheels get the grease.

Go back a few years and the tinfoil hat theories about United evaporate to be honest. Even the theory about top sides winning more penalties looks weaker.

What does become apparent is that the number of penalties awarded has been creeping up slowly over the past decade.

Again thats a no brainer, under relentless FIFA pressure and rule changing to make the game more universally appealing with more goals and basically non contact.

Maybe. I don't think the game has gotten worse as a result of tinkering with rules interpretation to be honest.

It's perhaps a bit less end to end than in your salad days Biggs, but what are you supposed to do, hate the world for learning how to pack a midfield and play a double six in defence?

Well Burnsy, I grew up and learned to love the game in an era where ruthlessly defensive tactical discipline and hard as nails tackling ensured that the side which scored first usually won. Germany Italy and Argentina ruled, and France Holland and Brazil were hopelessly naive and unsuccessful, I'm talking 1974-90.
You could pass back to the goalkeeper and cripple any opposing player who dared cross into your half, and guess what? The games were still exciting and I'm still alive......

Err that tackle was worth a yellow- A 2nd yellow.
You had to attack someone with a weapon to be shown a straight red in those days.

A second yellow is usually shown before the red card.

We've had almost as many penalties awarded to us as United. 2 seasons ago we would have had more.

But then United have only had 26 penos awarded against them compared to our 42. That could be explained by a lack of attacks from opposition teams and a top defence. I still think clear penalties are not awarded to them often enough.

The statistic brilliance there that showed that penalties for and against are the same number, could well be THE most rubbish stat ever recorded in football.
