Replay shows he clipped Valencia's heel before he got around him. Definite pen.

The minutiae of the various calls hardly matter when the run of everything is in United's favour.

Two penalties, United's call given, Liverpool's not.
Two players go in dangerously, United's man unpunished, Liverpool's sent off.

It has been very hard for a long, long time to get the run of the refereeing against Ferguson. No other reason at all why they wouldn't be going home with 1 or 0 points instead of 3.

Just imagine if we get similar decisions against City, we'll definitely be accused of stealing it.

We've been robbed off quite a few pretty decent ones whereas Manure get a free pen in almost every home game, most of which are complete utter bollocks. Can't be bothered a lot of the time watching Manure play at Old trafford.

Its lucky if it happens sporadically.

It is definitely not if it happens constantly over 2 decades.

But that's just because you're being selective. United had two other calls for a penalty which weren't given. The latter of the two where van Persie was practically dragged away from the ball seemed legit. Liverpool got a dangerous freekick at the edge of the box that probably shouldn't have been given. Suarez nearly scored there.

Liverpool were just plain shite. They got what they deserved. United weren't much better but they were more disciplined and less erratic. Sometimes it's all it takes to win when you play the relegation fodder.

I dunno if that was a "definite" pen. Valencia looked to go down before there was any contact. Let me put it this way: if that was us at OT, we wouldn't have got that call.

@[deleted] No, not really. Liverpool had United rattled and on the ropes right up until the red. They were killing them through the midfield and generating by far the lion's share of dangerous moments. Had Van Persie even seen the ball before the red card?

Liverpool lack a plan and could do with a decent player up front, but to say they were "shit" without acknowledging United were as bad, or worse, is itself selective. United were rubbish.

Selective reading too? I've already acknowledged that United were poor. Both teams were rubbish. Liverpool were just worse. Twice the pressure doesn't make up for having half the brain. Saying "it could have gone the other way if this and this happened" doesn't prove anything. It's not a valid argument. If you want examples of the sort of unfair advantages United enjoy on the field you just need to look at Southampton the other week. Or most league games they normally play, really. Not today though. Liverpool screwed Liverpool over, not the referee. It wasn't an isolated occurrence either. They've looked like this in every game they've played so far.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that - in the match I saw, Liverpool had far superior possession and chances prior to Shelvey's dismissal, and United hardly had the ball in the final third.

After the red, it turned into a scrappy armwrestle with very few redeeming features.

But why go on about it then? The red card was fully deserved. You could perhaps make an argument for Evans being dismissed as well but it was hard to catch without the benefit of replay. What everyone, including Halsey, saw was Shelvey banging into someone studs up with both feet off the ground. It's a real dick move.
