I was at France 98 and I can tell you that he virtually did lead an average French side to victory, just as Maradona led a very average one in Mexico 86.

Having watched it on TV we can say otherwise.

Personally don't think Zidane is as good as people make out. Maradona yes, Zidane no.

It wasn't an average French side though, personally I thought Zidane was more of a talisman in 2006. Him and Thuram transformed the team - and kept Domenech in a job for 4 more years.

No, Tony look- I said virtually single handedly, I know there were other players in the team but they lacked a striker in particular .....

And yes Dules you do have to scoop the biggest trophy to be considered the greatest.
And Messi has never even lit up the world cup never mind won it never mind won it virtually single handedly.

Zidane didn't become big until after the final. Actually nobody had any real idea how it would have all turned out. Before the tournament, most were just grumbling about Jacquet (the manager) not being good enough.

Zidane bossed it in 00, and the knock outs in 06, but so did a few other players.

Both my brothers are PSG fans... I told them earlier in the season that we'd probably meet in the Champion's League, thinking at the time we'd whizz passed them to the next round... not so sure who'll get bragging rights now if that draw happens next week !
