I know, I was thinking as I posted that would probably involve him going to City, or horror of horrors United or Chelsea.
Seriously though, he wouldn't score 86 goals in a calender year if he played in a league where they know how to defend.

However, Muller's record includes 12 goals (in 5 games) he scored in the Ligapokal which was a competition that included teams from the lower division and averaged 8 goals a game.
I don't think it's the league that's making things easy for him, because he's freely scoring in the CL as well, it's the team and the way he's allowed to play.
Defenders give him an insane amount of room. Bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point.

He's human in Champions League against good opposition though. In any case Messi is easily the best player in the world at the moment. It's just that his record is amplified partly because of Barca's greatness, partly because of the low standard of defending in La Liga. You see it with Falcao and Ronaldo too. They wouldn't score fifty goals a season in Premier League, even though they'd be the top scorers there as well.

It'd be horrible for us but considering the historic status Messi is assuming, I'd like to have him in the PL, just to see exactly how good he is against the teams and in the conditions we watch week in week out.
in the meantime, PL defending is a bit of a disaster too

Absolutely no comparison. Apart from being able to pass back to the goalie, in those days defenders carried little surgical saws and amputated your leg if you came into their half.
I don't take Messi's 'record' too seriously. I watched the game last night. La Liga is a big joke created by Barca and Real's greed. Which is sad because 10 years ago, La Liga was just far better than Premier League.
Well, if you look into Müller's record you'll find it was created under similarly lop-sided conditions by a club enjoying a period of similarly great dominance domestically and in Europe.
It's still 85 fricking goals ...
Messi can kiss my big, black ass. Along with everyone else associated with the Nou Camp. We are going to face him, you know. In the next round. Hopefully, by then we have a DM who can just crash into Messi and his impish friends.
There have been many sides in football history who have had periods of dominance, Messi plays in a league where robust challenges are outlawed and in a side that has almost official sanction, until he does it on the international stage and wins a world cup virtually single handedly as Mueller, Pele, Maradona and Zidane have he will never be considered top rank.
Messi's an incredible player. Control, finishing, vision, movement - all outstanding.
He's already considered "top rank" by everyone except the odd bizarre, cranky, senescent holdout. 🙂
Not cranky. Just sick of Barca. If they showed us a bit more respect, I'd reciprocate.

Didn't say he wasn't a top contemporary player, but be truthful- Would you take him over a peak Bergkamp or Henry never mind a peak Maradona or Zidane?
I wouldn't take him over Henry or Bergkamp for sentimental reasons, but I believe he would've torn the PL apart playing up front for us any time since it began.
I do agree that he's got a uniquely easy ride at Barcelona though.

Zidane didn't win the world cup single handedly.
Bendtner gets a cheer for a successful pass. It's come to this for the Dane.
I don't think anybody can argue that Messi isn't the greatest player on earth
Messi is boring and probably should be decommissioned" for a season for the greater good of football
