Think a little too much is being made of his "huge failure" at Madrid this past season. So, they didn't win La Liga against a once more immense Barcelona, and they got knocked out of the CL by a quality Dortmund side. Big whoop.
It wasn't a big failure in terms of results.
But, the failure was how the whole team turned against him and the circumstances under which he was sacked from the club. He had a sacking from Abromovich before, but, Abromovich already had a reputation for strange decisions. He had always left his clubs as a hero to the fans and players. Here, he was booed by his club's fans and termed a lowlife and an attention-seeker by the opposition while his own board and players endorsed that view by remaining silent.
For someone used to success and approbation , this has definitely come as a shock to the system. Hence, the comments about football losing his values and unusually low-key press conferences.
