Gotta wonder what brought this on. Last year it was pretty much the opposite. Bayern looked uncomfortable on the ball and out of date while Dortmund ran circles around them. Are Kroos and Müller really that good, or are Bayern just getting more out of every single one of their attacking players when they don't have Gomez stumbling over the ball up front?

The three signings through the spine have taken them up a level, especially Martinez who has improved their possession game two-fold plus he's a unit and a workhorse. I think Alaba's development has been influential as well.

Dortmund not as hungry too. Their whole game is about running your balls off, and they're saving the big effort for the Champions League this year.

Bayern were mighty tonight. The contrast to our style of play is monumental. They make so many more long passes that potentially will hurt the opponent it isn't even funny. That in turn helps them to very rarely lose the ball in dangerous positions. Reus dwells on the ball, like we do all the time - that's the game right there.

martinez is key in this. having a stellar pivot like him can add a huge amount to a team.

Oh, I rate Martinez highly. But still. They are fifteen points better off in the table than they were at the same tame last season and he's only started 13 of their games.

Schweinsteiger is the pivot anyway.

Makes you wonder how much Bayern have actually underperformed in recent years. They tried to play like the old, traditional Bayern sides for a long time. The current setup looks more like something that Löw would create.

I always thought that Gomez was a big negative for them despite the goals. They looked quite similar to what they do now on the odd occasion that I saw Olic start for them last season. Clearly, they have injected some quality with Dante and Martinez but that guy is a real leech of a player.

He really is a doorstop. Easy to see why they signed him though. They went for the big target man type that traditionally has been successful for them. When they won Champions League ten years ago it was Jancker who played up front. He would have been a centreback if he came through today. My theory is that they expected something similar from Mandzukic too. He just turned out a lot better and they ran with it.

TBF he was doing ok till fairly recently.
Just hope their supporters continue dragging them down.
