Totally under the radar. Subtle with plausible deniability, giving the media nothing to work with. I look forward to the day every Arsenal player sticks the boot in with such delicacy.

Don't see what the problem is. Everyone is currently in such a cynical mood that even when a player beyond any reasonable doubt says something that expresses what most fans believe and would have said themselves, it is now scrutinized.

I say - well done, Jack. Don't even need to be "deniable" or under the radar. Someone who was our captain just told us: "fuck you, Arsenal". I don't expect anything less from a key player, and perhaps the next symbol of Arsenal (next No. 10, for sure), than telling him he's nothing to us. Which Jack did in a delightful manner, in my opinion (but I would applaud him even if he said it more bluntly).

He'll regret it in a few years? who cares?

Very nice words from Wenger on Wilshere - see arsenal.com:

“We lose great players but I want to show that we have great players at the Club,” said the manager. “We have young players, English players like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wilshere. We have fantastic potential here and when everyone is fit we will see that.

“I feel Jack will be one of the leaders of this club and by giving him the No 10 shirt I want to show I am confident he will be the one who will lead the team one day.

“I believe that he is at the stage where he needs something at the moment. At his age after one year out, that is not easy to take.

“Every day he comes in at eight o'clock in the morning and works out but didn't get anywhere. I want to show him that I believe in him and that he will come back quickly.”

There's a new dawn rising at this football club and I'm glad Wenger sees Wilshere as the man to lead us into this new era. Yes we may have lost two key first team players but for some reason there's an excitment around the club and hopefully with the last of the bad eggs out we can finally move forward without having to go two steps back first.

I'll remember this thread and come back when Jack gets fit, tears every midfield apart and leaves for a better challenge and money in 3-4 years.

I feel frustrated. Wenger is right, someone needs to do something about those rich fuckers buying clubs doing whatever they want, it can't work like that forever. When it stops and the financial rule finds the light of the world, we'll be a force again.

The same propositions regarding 'bipolar' fan sentiment with respect to players would also apply, writ large, to supporting a club … but no one advocates an emotionally detached 'thank you, next …' in that case.

I think it would be extremely boring being an Arsenal supporter without the emotional investment. Both in the club itself, but also to players. If there weren't the emotional lows, then I think I would be unable to get the emotional highs.

Yeah, what would be the point exactly?
May as well just read the results every week.

I've no intention of going against my natural way just to avoid a few days distress when and if a player leaves 🙂
So what if it's peaks and troughs?
If there's reason to believe in a player, or like a player why not? It's normal.
If given clear and real reasons not to, deal with and move on.

Let hope Jacky can follow in the footsteps of the former.

I don't think giving him the no.10 gives us any clue as to his position. I do happen to think that Wenger always had a more attacking role in mind for him, but what's practical for Arsenal will determine his position. e.g. if we don't buy a defensively-able midfielder then he might well play box-to-box, with Cazorla further up. But I think he might play right midfield/attack instead of Theo.

If that twitter guy, afccamden - who seems to be the Arsenal spokesman these days - is right, Wilshere got the shirt number just because he really wanted it. I don't think there was much thinking about it from Wenger's angle, despite what he might say on the club website. It's just a number.

Is it true that Afccamden didn't believe until last week that van Persie was going to sign for United?
Biggest story of the summer and he got it wrong.
I reckon he may have some access to info about what's going on behind the scenes, but only at a low lying gossip level.
Junior staff contact I reckon.
Certainly nothing to suggest he knows anything concrete about what's really going on in contract negotiations or transfer deals.

Not saying its the only reason, just further indication that he will play there, its his favorite position, he's getting the no. for that role, AW has effectively told him he is going to be the main now & the fact that he is well suited for it, 2+2..

Don't see it Doc (that the number is a real indication of anything). Just think Wilshere asked for it and Podolski was a pro about it and stepped aside.

I think Wilshere will get that role eventually but, as far as I've read, Wenger doesn't get involved in allotting squad numbers. It's between the players and Vic Akers.

I thought it was clear by now that squad numbers at Arsenal have no bearing on what role players are to perform. Look no further than Diaby with number 2, Santos with number 11 or Gibbs with 28.
