One of my main gripes with Wenger this season is that it took him thirty games go give Kos a decent run in the side. I just hope we don't end up losing him because of it.

Kos wasn't fit for periods of time and initally when returning to the team following those spells he was as shaky as Vermaelen.
As soon as he was 100% he won his place.

Thankfully Wenger came to his senses and got him in the team. His partnership with Per has come along very nicely and both compliment each other well.

“And every time he was close to coming back, he had another injury or sickness. He was sick a lot this year

Nothing to do with Wenger coming to his senses, just a matter of getting Kos fit enough for weekly PL games.

This guy could start for most European teams. Immense!

Reminds me a bit of Ferdinand in that he's a quality man marker but does have brain farts moment.

This guy is just immense. My favourite defender by a mile.

Per deserves alot of credit as well. Very consistently good the whole season.

I think Per has been one big joke for most of the season. He gets a lot of points for his personality though.

Interesting. This is the first I hear about it. I know he missed the odd game because of illness and/or injury but I don't think it was that many. He's been on the bench for the better part of the season. Would he have been there if he weren't fit enough to play?

At a guess I'd say yes Klaus, Wenger would have him on the bench even if he were not 100%.
He's done it with Jack, Diaby and Rosicky and it seems Poldi has been carrying a niggling injury all season.

Possibly, but those are players who can come on for a few minutes and make a difference in a game. Central defenders don't work like that. Of what use is a crooked defender when you're trying to hold on to a lead? And if Kos were unavailable for most of the season, why did we loan out Djourou who was our only backup option? I just don't buy it. It might have been a convenient way to decide which centreback to leave outside the starting eleven early on but when we approached the turn of the year he was clearly fit. Vermaelen and Per were just the preferred options.

Just cos you're not 100% doesn't mean you're crocked. Disrupted pre-season, niggly calf, a virus thing that takes a month or two to properly shake etc. On top of which he didn't look great when he did get games.

i'm not convinced by per, and probably never will be. i think he does bring some leadership and organisation at the back, but his slowness on and off the ball gives me constant palpitations.

as for kos, he has all the tools to be an elite defender. when he adds the final polish, he'll be extremely highly coveted.

Yes, I'm serious. He looked good for about two months or so. Since then he's been every bit as poor as Vermaelen. What I like about Per is that he takes a bit of responsibility and doesn't hide but ultimately he's short on quality and well below par in any aspect of the game where he needs to use his feet. He's a nice compliment to have in the squad and that's it. Need to upgrade him with a new starting player as quickly as possible though.

Both you and Y Va are right of course. It's just that this has never been the cited reason before. Instead Wenger has talked about how we've got three outstanding centrebacks and they can't all play.

Mert is a good defender, despite his lack of pace, but his distribution is terrifying.
