Let's just hope that he kicks on again over the next 3-4 years, he's into the business end of his career now and he needs to justify this contract.

I'm not sure he has massive upside.
The other thing with Theo is that after we decided to get rid of Fabregas, Nasri, RvP and Song, we left ourselves very thin in terms of quality. If we still had half of those players, I'd be fine with selling Walcott. Selling him now though would just help reinforce the idea that we sell our better players. As you say, he's average as fcuk. But so are we now 🙂

Upside will be measured in goals and assists, as it has always been; even with his limited ability he can still be a 20/20 player.

He's 24 this year and will have close to 200 appearances at the end of the season, so realistically one would expect more power and better decision making. I wouldn't think it unreasonable to expect some technical improvement too.

But anyway, not too worried about this contract as it won't be 'dead' money even if he doesn't improve; just hope he can up his game and really contribute in a better team.

He can be effective under right circumstances. I think the Theo Walcott of today with a playmaker like Fabregas feeding him would be quite useful. I am not 100% sold on Cazorla as our main playmaker. He makes a lot of weird passes in the box when he should be shooting or re-setting the play. Someone like Fabregas/Xavi feeding Theo would help us get more bang for buck from him

Nope, what I said is perfectly true.

For years you have been going on about stats meaning nothing, goals meaning nothing etc. Nobody has ever said that Theo isn't an average footballer; they have said he can and does contribute and been met with a wall of denial from you.

He's a quality footballer.

A footballer is everything, that includes pace and finishing and tackling and heading and the whole fucking lot. Not just a nice tough, step overs and good passing.

The noises seem to suggest he's penning a deal for 90k a week and 3m signing on fee. Puts him alongside Podolski as the highest earner.

As much of a prick I think Theo is, there's a bit of fire in him. This contract was about money but I think he really fancies himself as a top player and really does want to become like Henry. He is missing the intelligence but let's see how he gets on.

Nothing wrong with Theo's intelligence. At least not on the pitch. So much rubbish spouted about him being a stupid footballer. Just looking at his movement for 30 minutes should convince anyone. If you still think he is a stupid footballer - then I'd seriously question your knowledge of the game.

Are those the only two options? Intelligent or stupid? I was talking in relation to becoming like Henry. Having the striker's instinct, he is fine with. But he is missing the all-round play at the moment, and one of the reasons for that is he doesn't see a move ahead. Im not calling him stupid. So pipe the fuck down.

No need for language like that Patters.
As I said - if you watch Walcott play for 30 minutes and come to the conclusion that he is a stupid footballer, or indeed can't see a move ahead for that matter, then I would seriously question that person's knowledge of the game. Doesn't make him/her into a worse fan or any less emotionally invested. Take it for what it is my friend.

His movement is very good, Rex but his overall decision making, creativity and ability to find solutions to problems put in front of him still need plenty of work.

He seldom loses possession due to poor pass selection any more.
His not being able to see the field of play properly with the ball at feet is more due to lacking the required technical level to look up often enough while still carrying the ball. Has nothing to do with 'intelligence'.

Whichever way you want to slice it, the boy is limited - whether it's because of its technique or decision making. Excellent player within his limitations but still.

I take your point but for the record, Theo is way off Ian Wright's level. A long way. Wrighty was a dream forward, instinctive, able to adapt to a vast array of opportunities.

Theo is one-dimensional. When focussed on his limited abilities he's very effective. But he's still very one-dimensional.

Re: Capi & Lagos' little tiff

To be honest, Theo's numbers have been poor until recently, haven't they? Don't think the majority of people thought he was an average 'footballer' either until recently.
