Moved very early on Podolski, and Köln had the drop.
Arteta was suspect and perhaps not in heavy demand because he'd been crocked (cf Diaby and imagine us trying to sell the guy).
Malaga were about to go bust and couldn't pay their bills.

Special circumstances in other words.

Big teams were not after any of those guys. That meant we did not have serious wage competition.
If we go for the players I have listed above from Everton and Newcastle, we can similarly pay them relatively low wages because there won't be a big contest for them

Club was going bankrupt, player was out injured for two years, club got relegated.

I'm not saying good players have not been signed on relatively economical deals, just not as many as the other way around. I'm sure we could nab someone like Demba Ba for 70k-80k but we'll have to be clever about it. Also, the transfer from one Premier league club to another will be more expensive.

The more specific our requirements are the harder it will be to fill them with players who 'fell off the back of a truck', like Cazorla.

Maybe it can be done … I certainly think we can get decent players on less than £100k/w, just probably not very many established PL stars with prospects at rival clubs.

Ummm...our squad is choc full of players at the level you're describing. We need to keep all of those, which means giving incremental wage increases, suitably reward the ones that do very well AND add 2-3 players of star quality.

We can keep going after all these players to solidify our claim for 4th, but if we want to be a top team, we should not be adding those guys to what we have right now. Right now, we need Gotze, Balotelli, Cavani, Reus, Isco-level targets. We need to go big, and then start shipping out our charity cases. We need players who make guys like Cazorla and Giroud even more valuable by joining us.

Huntelaar seems to be falling off a truck. Just like Theo in contract (except he's said clearly he's not signing), and earns 60k.
he's no Cavani, but he's better than Chamakh (a specific requirement, I'd say).

Besides, you all seem to be ignoring one talent that is not disputed: boss knows how to find players. That is just another way to say he knows how to find people who are payed less then what they realistically merit. I f this really is a competitive advantage we have (or still have), no reason not to build on it. In other words: more reason to think we can get the level we want.

I dont really understand whay we're discussing anymore, but i do know we've had a lot of 'mid level' players leave us in recent years because they've had very big offers from richer clubs. I also dont think the players listed above are an answer to anything; they come with a huge financial commitment and question marks as to their overall quality.

Yuvinho, part of the premise of this discussion is that we no longer have a particular advantage scouting obscure players—Claudius and Lagos are pointing out that in recent seasons the likes of Newcastle and Spurs are picking up bargains ahead of us even in Ligue 1. It's been a persistent theme of moanologue around here.

Cazorla was our only real scoop of the summer, I think. It's looking like we paid right on the money for Giroud and Podolski at this point, which is ok, of course.

Beside the point of the discussion, but Schalke's final offer is said to be c.£125k per week, so you would have to assume that he'll be looking for something around that figure wherever he ends up.

Huntelaar is not the answer to arsenals problems would rather see us invest in a player then just go for a guy who is going to be a bargain due to contractual issues, he also doesn't seem liek a good dressing room character e.g the msot the holland squad don't like his attitude.

We can but they are the second largest club (in terms of support) in Germany if I remember correctly.

Don't know if I am well enough informed, but it was my understanding that Mr Huntelaar will just not renew (cos wants perm football). I also wonder about that amount.

BW: Tell me about failed signings?* wrong estimations of players? The bargain basement dept maybe closed, but it's not necessary for my argument: great value for money is. I think we got that recently - last 3, Art and Per, if you look further back you'd obviously find more.

*I'll give you Gervinho - but I can't say I was complaining myself when he was signed. And stupido da costa is not a good argument.
