Per on his way out?

Asa isn't completely convinced by Kos and thinks there is a balance there when Per plays which is lacking with Vermaelen and Koscielny play who are both a little rash and gung-ho at times.

I like all three of them and think they are fantastic, and although Vermaelen isn't quite as good a defender as the other 2, he brings a lot of personality and drive to the team. Makes me want to see 3 at the back.

Not so sure about that. Kos and TV are both a bit too rash for my liking. One of them - certainly. Both of them together? Hmm. Not a great partnership so far IMO. We miss the calmness and positional perfection that Mertesacker brings IMO.

Would be shocked if we sold him so soon, only reason I can see us getting rid is if he wants to go back to Germany or isn't happy here and I don't think that is the case.

Kos and Verm has been awful several times even recently.

Against teams that move the ball around quickly, they get pulled out of position, and often don't seem to communicate too well together. Both very good defenders in their own right, but hardly a consistently brilliant pairing.

Agree with that, and that is my concern.
In their defence they haven´t really played too much together.

They can be very good.

Koscielny has looked like a much better player for most of this season, despite the fact he's a chinless wonder, and when you put two good players together you'll often get good performances. But I'm still not convinced they're a partnership.

Our defence seems to be better off these days though, we've only let in 6 goals and kept 4 clean sheets in 8 games.

Obviously the return of full backs have helped but as a pairing Koscielny and Vermaelen have had as many good moments as they have had bad.

I just have the feeling that Mertesacker would have been around to clean up behind Kos/TV when they get it wrong. (Mostly Vermaelen these days).

I don´t think Taarabt would have scored had Per played with TV for instance.

By the same token, I'm not sure we would have dominated so much against City, or rather; the back four wouldn't have pushed up so far and helped us dominate the ball, if Mertesacker was in there in place of either Koscielny or Vermaelen.

It's not like Per hasn't hade any mistakes this season. He's made a lot of them and a few has led to us conceding stupid goals. It's also something that comes with the job.

Thats why I love how those 3 gives us different options in defence

Definitely mate. Great options all three of them. We need to make sure we have similar options throughout the squad if we want to challenge United next season.

Per Mertesacker could make a return to the Arsenal first team fold sooner than expected with German publication Bild claiming the centre-back is due to return to training later this week.

The giant defender has been sidelined for two months since rolling his ankle at Sunderland, but despite undergoing surgery has made swift progress with his rehabilitation.
