Honestly, if it comes down to him running down his contract or man united paying 15m for him, i would rather we keep him and let united have a 30 year old player on 200k a week next season.

Our clear out is not complete yet, we still have alot of deadwood we need to offload next season, I would rather RvP stay with us for one more season, it is to his best interest to perform at his best, hopefully grab the attention of barca and real while winning us a trophy.

If we keep him i don't think its in his best interest to run his contract down, its too risky. He would spend another year on a mere 70k a week when he could take a 5 million sign on fee and make 120k a week and his stock could fall by next summer if he picks up injuries. If we keep him then he would probably sign a contract within the season. Its now or never for him, this is the best time to move on or the ship will be long gone.

If he's forced to stay here I wouldn't imagine he'd break into a sweat for us in case he does get injured.
Thats pointless just get of him to anyone but Utd, if there are no other takers just let him rot in the reserves so as he doesn't stink out the squad.

Are the two situations any different?

Vieira openly bashed the club each summer as he tried to engineer a move away but we never let him rot in the reserves or stripped him of the captaincy, maybe we're all making too much of this poisonous atmosphere thing.

Vieira is no angel but even he had the good sense not to go to one of our domestic rivals.

I have nothing against players who want to leave, the majority of the players we sign won't have any affiliation with Arsenal and they don't have to.

But in van Persie's case we've made more concessions than any other player we've had and put an inordinate amount of faith in him when a lot of people felt we should have sold him. Despite that, he's had the balls to slag off the club and try to engineer a move away to Manchester United. The cunt is strong in this one.

I know I'm a Vieira apologist, but I don't ever remember Vieira "openly" bashing us in one summer, nevermind each of them. He was a bit smarter than that.

Never thought of Vieira as a gooner in the same way I think of Thierry. If he's a legend it's only because of his quality's as a player and his contribution to our sustained success at the time. Having said that, I can't remember him ever saying anything that seriously compromised his status (at least not until after leaving).

He is a legend, but it's just the vibe I get off him that makes me feel a little uncomfortable saying that.

I'd go further than saying he's not as much of a Gooner. I get the feeling he stopped giving about the club after leaving. That's not a critisism, just how it is or how I see it.

Vieira had already been involved in three league titles and three FA Cup wins at that stage. That's the difference and that's why he's a legend.

If Van Persie had already achieved such feats—as opposed to having a bit part role in our 05 FA Cup win before the start of a six year rolling injury crisis which continued more or less up until 18 months ago—he wouldn't be receiving the sort of response he is now.
