Come on, how many times does it have to be said; a player does not sign in that situation no matter what you offer. It would be absolutely retarded for van Persie, or Nasri for that matter, to have done so.

Maybe signing a new contract then would have been impossible, I just wish the issue was addressed back then, see where RvP stands in his contract issues.

After losing Nasri,I am surprised that our board and wenger didn't sit down together and had a chat about how to prevent that sort of thing again.
It's one thing losing a player who wants to leave and losing a player who you can't keep for non-footballing reason.

How would you sort it out number? Make 2 years the new "one year left" on their contracts? Then what?

Only way to sort it is money (and lots of it).

Probably something along the lines of selling him in May, not have first contract talks somewhere in June and finding out that RvP isn't going to sign, which was apparent to all of us for the entire year.

its the 9th of august and we are still looking for buyers offering more than 8m, and its unsettling the squad for the upcoming season.

I am not pissed that this has happened, I am more pissed that it has happened AGAIN, and our inability to learn from history tells me that it won't stop happening.

Again, if the player refuses to discuss his contract, what can you do? Sell him? Isn't that the situation you're trying to avoid?

We clearly have learned in that we didn't let him ruin our summer in the same vein as Nasri and Cesc did, and have brought in 3 quality attacking players quickly to strengthen our position. But there isn't much more than can be done. Players have the power to do this and some of them are clearly ruthless enough to take advantage.

On one hand, we sign most of our players down extremely early to long term contracts, while on the other, our best players run their's down. What made last summer so bad was that we bought AFTER we sold. This situation with Van Persie is going way, way better than I expected. We've bought before selling so now waiting until the last minute is actually a good thing.

We've offered him contracts this summer, last summer, during all of last season, and probably the season before that. Just because WE knew the contract situation in June doesn't mean anything. We know nothing. Players and agents decides "not to talk" about contracts. What is Arsenal supposed to do? Kidnap them, tie them to a chair, and pound their fists on the table under some harsh bare-bulb lighting?

Refusing to use a lamp shade only works in films.

Without substantial evidence, it seems to be a marginal factor relative to the wages our star players know they may be able to command elsewhere.

I'd say the reports of Van Persie being offered a hefty signing on fee indicate an expectation created by the signing on fees offered to other recent high performers like Cesc (who of course buggered off relatively soon after signing that new long term contract anyway, the bugger).

But anyway, as I argued elsewhere I think there's an additional upside to player retention that has a financial value which we tend to pretend doesn't exist. We should build loyalty by rewarding longevity.

Because, as far as he's concerned, it would strip us of the right to say £x is the most we can offer if we're offering another player in the squad more than double. Offering a huge wage would also encourage players to follow the example set by the likes of van Perise and Nasri and run down their contract.

Funny there are some people who thinks RVP wouldn't be a success at Utd. United is already so far away from us, this summer could be the one where we finally strengthen enough to catch up with them. Then we should sell our best player to them so they can compete with City and leave us behind again? Fuck no. Some people really forgotten how much they despise and laugh at our demise over the last few seasons. I would rather sell to Spurs than them.

That sounds nice, Burnsy. But it means we have to start low so there is somewhere to go, which isn't always easy.

If you exclude Man City's highest paid players and Wayne Rooney, 130k a week would almost certainly put RVP in an elite top bracket of Premier League earners. I include Chelsea, Utd and Liverpool. That wage, along with a big signing on fee, is about as generous as we can afford to be I reckon.

I suppose the situation can't be helped and maybe I was expecting the impossible from the club.

I am just pissed that the situation had to happen again after what happened to nasri. That's a huge blow to our credentials as a 'big club' if this sort of things happen to us every summer.

Overall I am happy with our summer, even if RvP leaves, he can't criticize us for not showing ambition.

Funny this. When RVP released his statement I was all for us selling him. Now, with Cazorla in the bag and rumors of Sahin, I have shifted towards us keeping him unless a REALLY good offer comes in. For sporting reasons. Before I couldn't see us challenging for anything, but now...

The squad as it is now is good enough to mount a serious title challenge. We have 18-20 players of real quality IMO, and that is a first. Theo signs, possibly Sahin in... We should be right up there!

Selling RVP would change all that. A £25m offer would be difficult to turn down, but I really hope the club is strong enough to keep the stance that a fee in that region is what it will take for us to sell to a PL club.

This summer with RVP we may find out how much those who call the shots at our club value a title push in £. How much of a financial hit are they prepared to take on RVP for us to, finally, be able to mount a real challenge?

This is all about what Arsenal wants to do.

Rex, we were 4 points off the title in 2008.

In 2009-10 with a few weeks to go we were 6-4 points off the lead but collapsed as we usually do.

This squad has mounted a title challenge in recent years, just that the squad hasn't been big enough to maintain it.

We have to prioritize next season and if I'm honest I'd rather we rested players in the league and go all out for the Fa cup and Champions League.

We have mounted a title challenge just once IMO in the last 7 years. This season, with RVP in the squad, we could do it again I think. Without him - not so much.
