Gibbs' persistent injury problems and niggles are bad enough that we can't afford to let Clichy leave - not that I would anyway at this point.

We are pretty thin on quality among the fullbacks, our first choice players are pretty good (despite criticism) but there's not much behind them.

If Van Persie's injuries are enough to call his career at Arsenal into question, shouldn't the same be asked of Gibbs? Van Persie is an established member of the first team and one of our few true stars so it's easy to see why he's given some leeway. How long do you think we can persist with a squad player like Gibbs before we have to call it quits and bring in someone more reliable?

Nothing really happens with the quality of our game when Gibbs is injured. When RVP is injured we are in trouble. Big difference IMO.

I know it doesn't have an immediate impact on the first team but it's the knock on effects of having an oft injured squad player I'm more concerned about, especially considering Clichy's form is patchy over the course of a season and we have a number of sub-standard players in the squad already.

Big difference is that Gibbs is 21, he's far too young to be worrying about at the moment.

Clichy, for example, was plagued by injury for three years and then was an ever-present in the 2007-08 season and hasn't relapsed since.

Clichy is one of the main reasons I'm worried about Gibbs though. I'm not saying we should get rid of Gibbs, I'm just wondering what the consensus is regarding how long we wait on him to become dependable fitness-wise, especially given that Clichy is not the most dependable form-wise. We can't go on forever with a player who is out of form for long periods, with a back up who is unfit or injured for periods.

Gibbs seems a wee bit short of requirements defensively. Obviously a very good player, but it worries me when he's included in the side, I feel we would need a better level and greater continuity in the rest of our defence to carry him at least initially.

We've let Traore go without identifying a clear third choice left back ... could be Botelho next season if he manages to get a permit and is recalled.

Even if it isn't Liverpool, he can hopefully make Tottenham or Manu and that will be a massive boost. Should have Cesc, Song and Theo back this weekend, plus Chesney in a fortnight.

If we can field that, or that -1, for half a dozen matches before the end of the season, including vs United, we have a chance. So long as we have the majority of Szczesny/Fabianski, Djourou/Vermaelen, Cesc, Song and Walcott out we're basically fucked.

The fact that they're all coming back as they are makes those 4 dropped points against Sunderland and West Brom very, very difficult to swallow - 1 point behind with a game in-hand, we'd be strong favourites.

Yep. I'm hoping that when Gibbs finally gets 10 games in a row that his injury probelms disappear. A lot of our squad players - the one that get a game once a month - have injury issues. Their bodies haven't adapted to full-on, fast paced football, and they won't until they're exposed to that regularly.

Apparently he just took a knee to the inside of his thigh, and should be okay for Saturday. That's what they're saying is the latest out of the Dutch camp on A-M anyway.
