you have to be a 12yr old to expect players to be supporters. they're just pursuing their career. it's just football at the end of the day. just makes it more special when a certain team or some of the players do form that special bond with the supporters.

To be fair it's obviously somewhere on the spectrum between "just a job" and messianic status. Professional players are hothouse flowers for the most part.

I'm sure it is true, but even 20-30 years ago players would meet up after the game? I may have read it in Fever Pitch or some other autobiography?

At any rate, players don't stay at any club for very long and, for instance, van der vaart and van Persie have been friends long before they faced each other in an NLD. The same goes for Walcott/Bale and so on..

I don't expect players to be 'fans', or to despise players on rival teams, but it's not just a job like any other.

I'd say it is to a vast majority of them. Not so much the younger ones but when they hit 25-26 and have been doing it for ten years plus, it becomes a job first and foremost.

It's not a job like any other because of the fans. Nobody, even Ashley Cole or Samir Nasri, wants to be disliked or hated.

well sure, they're in the entertainment business, but frankly, i dont think either cole or nasri really cares what we think of them now. though like you say, they probably would prefer to be liked by the supporters of their current clubs.

it's just not realistic to expect all footballers to be in it for the love of the game, and for footballers to somehow end up at the clubs they love, and for that club to somehow not be barca, bayern, milan, united, liverpool or madrid, as it is for probably 70% of football fans worldwide.

Nothing wrong with socialising with your International team mates or any other players really. It certainly doesn't mean you're only in it for the money.

Pardon my cynicism, but the only reason he is staying is because he knows he can't get a better contract elsewhere. When we signed him, he was available on a free transfer and we paid over the odds in wages because we could (with no transfer fee required). No other club that is capable of dishing out good wages will touch him now. The very fact that his ambitions are to prove he can be 'useful' rather than a key figure suggests he is more than happy playing a limited role.

Pure speculation on my part, of course. But I think that's a reasonable take.

Talk is cheap. If he wants to convince people he's telling the truth and actually has any ambition of being 'useful' then he needs to show it. As soon as he comes on, we're effectively playing with 10 men.

He really should be offered around for free if needs be. And even payed to go if that's what it takes. Hes making a show of our bench.

I tell you what pisses me off? Why in every interview Wenger has to do - pre-game, post-game, whatever - he is asked the most inane questions; "Are you happy with the result?", "Do you want to keep Van Persie?" etc. but not asked, "Why aren't you playing Park Chu Young? - A 26 year old, captain of his country, on the back of a decent goalscoring season last year, and has shown a good touch/finishing in the limited carling cup jog outs this year." Nobody is expecting him to be great but he has to be better than Chamakh, no? Chamakh has had 17 appearances this season. Why not give those minutes to Park?

Park Chu Young is probably the 10,000th most important player in British journalists' minds. I can go for weeks without thinking about him. You should try it too.

Chamakh is a much bigger concern because he came here for 2 months and did a wonderful job for a rookie. And then, it's like somebody (maybe Bendnter) put a hex on him and his feet stopped working.
