Don't think it's anything to do with it being his first season. He's basically a goalscorer and not much else, so if he's not scoring he looks utterly useless. Problem for Soldado is that he's surrounded by greedy cunts and he's very much a player that relies on good service. As a striker it must be utterly infuriating playing with Townsend and Sigurdsson either side of you.

Spurs have scored 9 goals in 10 games but are 4th on the table. that's a bit unsettling. they've been solid at the back with 5 conceded. if Erkisen and Lamela ever start playing and beef up their attack, they could be a proper Champions League contender. I'd love it though if that 4th spot went to Everton ahead of United and Spurs.

Townsend is thankfully ruining their game completely right now. I love the England hype machine when it doesn't involve an Arsenal player, really throws everything out of whack.

Can someone explain to me why AVB would bench Eriksen and Sigurdsson after they started the season so well and were responsible for all their good moves early on? Does he feel they don't defend enough? Bizarre but appreciated

You do in the sense that you're competing with other "shit but cash rich" clubs for shit players.

Clubs that are regular CL qualifiers effectively have access to an extended player market and don't have to battle it out for Soldados.

Apparently Liverpool were sniffing around Soldado for example. We were supposedly interested, but I doubt it was at anything approaching the price Spurs paid.

Though I'll admit a major factor was probably all the selling clubs knowing Spurs had the Bale money and a need to invest.

i don't buy that. the clubs will accept whatever they think is valuation. their sense of specific valuation vis-a-vis another club is more likely to be driven by

how much money they have [as you rightly point out, everyone knew Spurs had money to blow]
how desperate that team's need is in that position

the other things driving up price i feel are related to general inflation. transfer fees were nuts this summer

Competition between the "viable interested clubs" for a player is an important factor in determining the fee.

Changes hugely if you're a no mark club like Spurs. CL players sign for CL clubs.

Even with money in their pockets, Spurs compete with the also-rans for the rest - as we can see from the players they've picked up.

That's why Soldado goes to Spurs for 26m but Higuain goes to Napoli for 30m.

I agree with Burnsy. Its the exact reason why clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham constantly "blow" huge amounts of money on average players while we pick up Podolski or Giroud for £10m.

Don't think Podolski and Giroud are comparable to their signings tbh.

Koln had just been relegated (iirc), and Giroud had a (really stupid) clause in his contract.

Podolski and Giroud were just smart signings, we didn't get them cheap because we're a big club.

Spurs didn't 'battle' for Soldado. He had a release clause in his contract and aside from some Russian side, only Spurs were interested.

Aye, it's the same bracket we've been stuck in for the last couple of years. There's money but not enough to really compete with the big uns and the attraction is fading, meaning you have to pay every cent of what a player is worth without necessarily getting much in return.

That being said, it's clear that Spurs got this one badly wrong. Soldado was always a bit shit. He knows how to hit a ball but he's limited in every other way. Needs a lot of chances in order to convert one into a goal too, which is bad news since he's playing for one of the least creative clubs in Europe.
