😆 I do not hate Australia at all but yes I do enjoy seeing their cricket team lose having grown up watching England get smashed by them throughout the 90s and early 2000s. Much prefer to see NZ lose though and would have preferred them to have lost that match by 10 wickets yesterday. Kiwis tend to be insufferable when it comes to the anti-Englishness and it's generally always done in a nasty way whereas with you Aussies I usually find it to be more friendly and fun banter when we happen to play each other at whatever sport.

Yeah, no one really despises England in Perth that I notice. If anything there's a lot of expat wistfulness here, both on the part of English expats, and strangely enough all the South Africans and Zimbabweans as well. It'll be one of the last outposts of the British Empire.

The detestation of the eastern states is far more vitriolic.

When travelling around Europe in 2009 I did one of those group bus tours where 90% of the group (of 25-30) was Australian and I did notice a bit of that. Noone really commented at all on me being English while they were a few wise cracks about living in NZ, but they were all at each other about their respective states. The person from Perth would ask "Where are you from?" "I'm from Sydney" "Oh I'm sorry to hear that" followed by some comment I wouldn't quite get with not being from there. 😆

Really should visit Perth one day having been to the other the main places (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide) most of them more than once.

UWA used to have a club called the "Kick a Vic" club which held explicitly anti-Victorian social events, burned effigies of Robert DiPierdomenico, and so on.

I think the Student Guild eventually shut them down, but it was fairly representative of the humour of the time 😃. Of course, even while Perth people are slamming Victoria (or even more often NSW) they're clambering over themselves to brag about their latest trip over to Melbourne or Sydney, the bars they went to and the frocks they bought etc.

Hey everybody. Just wanted to introduce myself (and find out if I can even post on the forums...seems like I can).

I am an Arsenal fan living in the States, and like Sirius I began following the club just after the Invincibles. It was a combination of the pretty football and the way the club was being run...that said, I wasn't expecting us to go on a trophy drought lasting half a decade.

Nice to be on board though...not many people know much about football where I'm from.

I think you "get it" TGP.
I've been a fan since 1971-Traditionally, we've never been a powerhouse of the English game.
We've never dominated decades like Liverpool & Man Utd and yet we've always been there or thereabouts waiting for the slip up to grab our 15 minutes of fame, we're consistant if nothing else.
And the Spuds will find out that it's not so easy to dislodge us from our rightful 4th place.
