You pretty much know what you will get with a guy who is 26, plenty of caps for Germany, used to top level football, and just entering his prime. We need more signings like him.

Absolutely.

He was the missing link in our defence really. We look in decent shape there now.

We will look better yet when TV is in the mix as well. Not only will we have a good CB pairing, but we will be able to rest a player feeling quite confident we won´t be shit because of it.

It really is this simple. It's not rocket science. You sign players of proven quality, you get quality performances.

I'm actually optimistic about the defence once Vermaelen returns. Unfortunately these days we're under so much pressure it's inevitable that we give away a few chances to the opposition because we do such a terrible job of keeping the ball away from our goal.

This time last season, a signing like Mertesacker could have made all the difference.

I like Mertesacker and think he's been good for us so far but he's getting too much credit for our results. Koscielny has been the better defender of late in my opinion. The game against Marseille was outstanding.

I think Per's presence has brought out the best in Kos.
Growing in confidence and authority because he's aware that he's alongside a player who has experience and knows how to defend.
Less stressful, shared responsibility.

Personally I think not having to play with Djourou has brought out the best in Kos. He looked good next to Vermaelen too.

Kos looked good next to djourou for five months so that makes no sense.

Djourou didn't look good though. I think the improvement in Koscielny's game is down to not having to carry Djourou around more than anything else.

Anyone got an explanation as to why Djourou's gone from being our best defender to our worst in the space of six months?

I thought both of them were pretty good up until that point and got a lot of undeserved blame for stuff that our midfielders and wide players caused. Djourou hasn't looked like Arsenal quality since, though.

I know he's been a liability in recent months but lets not take away the credit he deserves for most of last season. For about 4/5 months he was the best FIT center back at the club and most people agreed on that.
