i'm sure it's not just nostalgia. sol campbell in his prime was easily a better defender than any of our CBs, and it's not really close. he was legitimately in the discussion for best CB in the world. he had the power to plow any of them over, the pace to keep up with any striker in the world, and a true defender's mentality and reading of the game. he wasn't as good on the ball as vermaelen or koscielny but who gives a shit. he got the ball to vieira and pires quickly enough. besides, he had toure next to him, who was more comfortable (when he wasn't making aimless long passes).

anyway, i agree mertesacker complements our other CB better. i'm just saying he's not a panacea - he's got his weaknesses, too, and they will be exposed.

'Everybody' keeps mentioning how slow Mertesacker is, and he is, but how often have you seen anyone burn him for pace?

Exactly. Per did well against pacy and tricky players like Silva or Kun. Why would it have been different against chelsea?
Fact is that our back four is more solid with Per, no matter how slow he is.
P.S: it is possible to improve Per? give him a boost in his speed? I mean in trainings

I think everyone sorta agrees that despite all of Mertesauraus's deficiencies, him +1 is the best option out there.

Just play Mert + 1 till it falls apart/teams figure him out.

The most important thing is long-term continuity. Whichever partnership we settle for will need games. You can't just throw on defenders who aren't match fit and then expect them to complete two Premier League games in a row without missing a beat against the top teams. It's not the way it works.

Campbell wasn't in contention for best CB in the world, not outside of Arsenal fans anyway. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that Ledley King spent more time being lauded as the best 'on his day' than Campbell did. Campbell's reading of the game was always always overstated, even back on AM where I said then what I'll say now. He was a reaction-artist. Not to the degree of Mr. Kolo 'Reflex' Toure but he reacted to a lot lot more than he anticipated.
