People need to stop seeing Song as a defensive midfielder. He clearly doesn't play as one. There is also no way anyone can convince me that he isn't largely playing as Wenger wants him to.

We have to win the ball back at some point; Song does that or at least contributes a hell of alot more to doing that than anyone else playing forward of the back four.

I know all these passy, passy little sluts are the rage at the moment, but this is a fundamental part of any team that hopes to win the premiership (and other leagues).

On that note, I found it telling that our midfield worked best when we had Arteta, Song and Ramsey fit and proper at the same time. We arguably played our best football somewhere between October and December. Game against Chelsea was probably the standout performance. Then Ramsey got injured and shortly after the whole team dynamic changed because of the fullback situation. Then it changed again. And then we tried to change back but without playing the proper players.

I blame the front three as much as the midfield to be honest. Song, in and of himself, has a passing game that doesn't really match the team as a whole but we need him for now.

But you're going to hear a thousand more fucking times that he lacks the 'discipline' to sit—when he hasn't been instructed to sit!

Say what you want about Song, he had a bigger positive contribution to our season last year than most other players

Beg to differ. We clearly played our best football in February and March. The Milan and Spurs performance were standouts.

Exactly. I fucking bet Wenger told him to go express himself as he wish to on the pitch. Go youtube Song vs United 10/11 when we won 1-0. He was fantastic sitting.

Point being that if Wenger told Arteta to "go and express himself" (and he probably does tbh), he'd still do what's best for the team, because he's a selfless team player. With Song we're talking about basic, stupid decisions that he consistently makes that put us under pressure and expose us. Really doesn't matter what Wenger is telling him.

Just like Arshavin you mean? And we all know what a selfless team player he is. One thing has bugger all to do with the other, and you know it.

Having good technique and a bit vision doesn't make you a team player, or have anything to do with the criticisms of Alex Song.

a) almost never makes a risky dribble
b) almost never plays a dangerous pass risking to put us under pressure on the counter
c) never also bombs forward and thus totally vacating the centre of the pitch

Song IMO doesn't always read these situations correctly. Still a great player though.

He is still a GOOD (great!? Seriously?) player with lots going for him. He's still pretty young too. I want him to stay and I want him to iron out his weaknesses, because he has a lot of ability.

So we know what Arteta doesn't do but then what does he actually contribute? Still not convinced and personally prefer 'old' Song shielding the defence.

Watch the games he DIDN'T play last season and then you will see what he contributes. Don't get me wrong - I will be disappointed if he is still first choice by Christmas, but he is a really good player.

Arteta does pretty much everything you'd want a central midfielder in a good side to do.
