I'm not an expert on M'vila but I paid close and careful attention to him in the games that I did seen him play.
My instinct on him is that he's a gamble, my impression was that he did not look like a player who I would rely on in close fought, tense, hard games.
Something casual in his demeanour, certainly not bloody minded in his desire to eliminate danger.

The main difference between Song and M'Vila IMO is that M'Vila likes defending a whole lot more than attacking. Song likes to be a part of the offense.

Having said that, I don't think Song is worse than M'Vila defensively. He is just much more than that. He is a much better footballer.

The main thing here though is that Wenger obviously doesn't 'just' want a dedicated defensive mid. If he did, Song has shown that he is well capable of playing that way.

I disagree with pretty much all of that, but then we've been here and done this on Song, and we all have our own ideas about his ability, and, especially, about how much of how he plays is down to Wenger and how much is down to his love of the limelight.

Yeah, M'Vila for me, but I don't know very much about Sahin. I just think we need a player like M'Vila more than we need a player like Sahin. Cazorla is the central midfielder I've been dying for us to have in there ever since Cesc went all Stevie G on us.

If I'm honest, I really don't see how the Sahin rumours can be true, if we plan to play Cazorla centrally. And I think we do. Even if we don't play him there, we still have a load of players in that position already.

I'd love both though. 🙂

Klaus is talking about complete players who can both attack and defend well. Like Arteta, Song and Sahin.

Aye. I think players like M'Vila are there mainly to cover for other players who can't defend. You might have that problem if you play the attacking midfielder as a forward but we don't. Going by our signings this summer we're not planning to do it in the near future either.

I think most top clubs in Europe in the last five or six years have been moving away from midfield specialists. It was apparent during the Euros too. The successful teams like Spain, Italy and Portugal went with central midfielders all the way. The ones who persisted with defensive anchors, like England, France and Holland, were knocked out fairly early (yes, other things factored in too).
