I'm curious Asa, from a defensive midfielder stand point, how is he inadequate? His passing is slick and tidy, his positioning and reading of the game is above average and also he can tackle without conceding a yellow for every second attempt. What type of player do we need for that role?

What role? We need midfielders who are adept at keeping the ball and moving it onto our forwards, players who know how to move into and use space when we have possession, who don't create pressure by giving the ball away cheaply when hassled.

M'Vila isn't better than any of our first choice midfielders. It's all very well chasing the ball at Rennes, but when he steps up and plays in a decent team he looks like a third wheel.

In other words, I want to see our attack fixed, and decent backup in the fullback positions. That'll do a lot more to reduce the number of goals we concede than blowing €20m on M'Vila.

We need to improve the protection our centre backs and defence are getting. I remember when we went over the 3 goals we conceded in the Norwich game and for every single one the primary fault came from shoddy pressing, protection and decisions in midfield. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Getting better back up fullbacks or a better playmaker isn't going to improve that.

Sure it will. Reason we conceded shit-loads of goals last year was because the majority of the squad posed fuck-all threat in possession. We were throwing men forward the whole time because those with jobs to do weren't getting them done.

If we sign M'Vila but don't fix the attack, we'll just be throwing a different body forward when we end up in the shit, except it'll be a worse player. We'll still concede loads.

I think we're trying to fix both ends by signing Giroud, Podolski and M'Vila. Plus we have Wilshere who will take up one of the attacking roles in midfield and be that player who uses the ball intelligently.

That seems to be something a few people have convinced themselves of, but it doesn't really stack up when you look at the vast majority of the goals we've actually conceded.

As I said, the Norwich 3-3 is the perfect example (there are loads more) of how a player like M'vila would improve us.

Heh. I didn't even see the Norwich match, was on holiday, and never felt inclined to watch the replay! However, I don't agree at all - players got caught out far too much last season pushing out too far. Happened time and time again.

It's fairly simple - if you want players to sit back, you need players in front of them who can get the job done. M'Vila will make us much worse at getting that job done - even if he makes us better at sitting back (though he's more Flamini than Gilberto anyway)

Think alot of the priority between bringing in an AM or CM depends on were Jack will play, i think he has to be an attacking mid.

Do you rate Arteta’s contribution this season? for me that is what he will bring to the team, he has a good range of passing & is more a DLP than a Makalele.

Ramsey, Diaby, Coqs - Don’t see how anyone could be happy with the options we have to come in if one of Song/Arteta gets injured. We got shafted when Arteta was out this season...

still need another creative player aswell.

OK, I understand your point of view but the reason I want him here is not because of his defensive capabilities only. The reason why I want him here is because of his passing abilities, reading of the game, and his tactical discipline, the last player who had all those features was Gilberto (minus the passing abilities).

The reason we conceded so many goals last season was because Alex Song went on his normal walkout and head in the clouds and Ramsey was a headless chicken most of the games we play, and both of them gives away the ball cheaply and are not tactical discipline. We need to eliminate that problem we can't have both of them in the staring line at the same time that will just drive you mad, thank God for Arteta he was our only discipline and positional aware midfielder we had last season

Well look, imo, this doesn't stack up to real analysis of the goals and chances we conceded last season;

It seems like it could be true, in an ad-hoc, off handed sort of way, but I dont think it is. Gibbs was often caught upfield, but that aside, our basic shape was usually decent and we were rarely caught on the break or from transitions this season. The problem was that the individual players within our system were repeatedly found wanting, making poor decisions, pressing at the wrong times and in ones and twos, getting on the wrong side, not tracking runners, losing basic challenges, diving in etc. It's all there in a microcosm in the Norwich game (Fulham away is another great example, when Dembele was given the freedom of West London by our midfield).

I think Asa has a point. I'm not a fan of M'Vila either for pretty much the same reasons he's given. He can play one position at Arsenal, and that position is already occupied by a superior player. We could force him to become more of a box to box midfielder but every time they've tried that at Rennes he's looked completely hopeless. It doesn't strike me as a great option to play Arteta in a more advanced role either. He's lost a lot of speed due to the injuries in the last few years. And he's been playing some of the best football of his career in that deeper role anyway.

I'd like us to get another holding midfielder because it's obvious that we need a proper backup for Arteta, but I'm not sure we should break our transfer record on getting one just because he happens to be the flavour of the season.

Yep, he makes a big difference, as we all know. But he's one player and he's 30.

And I dont see any reason why Arteta and M'vila couldn't play together. we might actually control games again, both with and without the ball.
