The mention of slowness, oil tankers and Senderos as some sort of a comparison is worrying.

On the plus side he's a mature (but not past it) experienced German international who should be a level above Djourou and infinitely better than Squillaci.

Should bring some discipline to our back four too?

I think I'm happy enough with this.

Mertesacker could probably turn in a decent 100M time, but that doesn't count for anything. He's incredibly slow over the 5 yards and has zero in the way of agility and balance.

Like I said, I'm really not happy about it, but it is what it is. Arsenal aren't signing the best, so a middle of the road player like Mertesacker will have to do. Middle of the road or not, he'll start for us without question.

would be an ok signing. vermaelen is our tough "enforcer", koscielny our pacey "recovery cb" whose solid 1 on 1. we could use with a bit of aerial strength and organizational skills in the back.

Think we'll get both?

Alot of talk at the start of the summer that we would sign two defenders and the Cahill rumours seemed too big for him to just slip away at this point. Santos seems very attacking; maybe him for home and 'easier' games and Vermaelen shifting for the tough games.

Hopefully. We must still have at least £40m just from the player sales money to play with and you have to think that the board know that they must get a couple of 'names' in at least.

They're not super quality.

They're foot soldiers, reinforcements, tough experienced Internationals drafted in to address the dearth of all of these elements in our squad.

For inspiration we're still going to be relying on super quality van Persie, quality Theo, quality Gervinho, super quality Wilshere and Ramsey plus our super quality new youngster additions.

At least I think that's the thinking behind these moves.

The problem isn't Mertesacker, the problem is the perception that's given to us fans. We all knew we were in for Cahill and we can't even get our transfer targets. How is that supposed to help us get behind the team? The board and management are too fucking ignorant.

Mertesacker is easy to criticise in style and perceived ability but rarely on performance. He is slow but he's n slower than John Terry, he's about twice as fast as Hyppia who was great in the Premiership. If we try to play a high line this will cost us but if adjust and play a bit deeper this could work out nicely. Anyway almost all our other defenders are plenty quick, if we defend as a unit we should easily be able to compensate.

Got the leadership skills we need at the back too. Hope his English is good.

and what system would that be? for the last 5 years its just been four blokes relying on athleticism to keep us out of the shit. expecting more of the same hairbrained tactics back there.

hopefully there is still a mystery midfielder in the works to blow our socks off.
